Xgl FAQ

Frequently asked questions about Xgl – please edit and add to this list!

  • Can each virtual desktop have a different wallpaper?

This is not possible.

  • Can I run games or applications that use 3d acceleration?

No, software cannot be run in Xgl with 3d acceleration. To get around this, one must run the application in a separate non-Xgl X server, such as through xgame.

On some platforms however, they may be a workaround to this limitation.

Configuration

  • How do you set keybindings for Compiz?

gconf-editor: /apps/compiz

  • How do you set the image on the desktop cube?

gconf-editor: /apps/compiz -> plugins/cube

Errors and Issues

  • Video is distorted with blocks and other distortion

Do not use X11 for video output, switch to Xv (Preferences – Desktop-Preferences-Multimedia Systems Selector-Video-Output-Xwindows: No Xv)

  • GConf Error: Adding client to server’s list failed, CORBA error: IDL:omg.org/CORBA/COMM_FAILURE:1.0

potentially dependencies missing in gnome

ATI Issues

  • I get only ‘half screen’

If you are using Gnome, try KDE instead.

  • Display distortion

Try upping the video ram to 32k, or if using 16bit color switch to 24 bit instead.
