Zoho featured in TIME.com article

In an article about Microsoft’s announcement-of-an-announcement regarding its web-based Office offering, Anita Hamilton writes about Zoho and quotes our Raju Vegesna. Excerpts :

“I think it’s about time the Office suite is free,” says Zoho’s tech evangelist Raju Vegesna. “We paid $500 for an Office suite when the price of the hardware was $5,000. Now the price of the hardware has come down to $500, and it doesn’t really make any sense for a piece of software to cost $500.”

For most users, however, free Web apps are really all you need. And they’re getting better all the time. Zoho has spreadsheet, word-processing, presentation and organizing programs, and lets you work both online and off; it even has an iPhone app.

Before you pay even the lowest price for Microsoft Office, give Zoho or Google Docs a try. They aren’t confusing, and they won’t make you feel stupid. To make absolutely sure, I became my own guinea pig. I typed this story in Zoho Writer, even though I had never even tried it until this week.

Thanks to Anita & TIME.

The Ajax Experience Call for Papers Closed

If you haven't already submitted your presentation idea for The Ajax Experience in San Francisco July 25-27, too late! The call for papers officially closed last week. We received over double the submissions we received in the last call and are hard at work reviewing them. Thanks to all of you who submitted a paper. We're stoked at how universally interesting this year's batch are; it's going to be a great show.

We're also pleased to announce that the Ajax Experience conference registration site is now live. Check it out at www.ajaxexperience.com and sign up today. With the call for papers in the review stage, obviously there's going to be a ton of content at the show not yet represented on the site, but you get the idea.

You may also notice that ajaxexperience.com now redirects to ajaxexperience.techtarget.com. Earlier this year, we joined forces with TechTarget to co-produce the Ajax Experience conferences and to bring more resources to running Ajaxian.com. Ajaxian has been getting less and less of our time through the years as our lives have gotten busier and we felt like it was time to get some help as we move into the future. This means you can expect to see more content from us and more features on the site (e.g., resources for people who are new to Ajax and don't find a stream of news stories as helpful as more remedial content, a section devoted to the frameworks, a *regular* podcast, and so forth).

Thanks to TechTarget for agreeing to help out and we hope to deliver great content to you for years to come.

Raju Vegesna gets interviewed for UTR

Zoho Evangelist Raju got interviewed for the upcoming ‘Under The Radar: Why Office 2.0 Matters’ conference to be held on March 23, 2007. From the interview :

Our motto is “Keep it simple”. So tell us in less than 20 simple words what you do.
We do online office. We offer a broad set of online applications for SMBs at affordable price.

Ok, so you have customers now. Queue the trite but required question…Now that Google is in the office 2.0 game and with all the interest from the other office giants-.how are you going to stay relevant?
Our aim here is not beating the giants like Google. Our aim is to provide very good set of affordable applications and serving our customers well and building a profitable business. There is no market that is completely owned by a single vendor. There is always room for more smaller vendors like Zoho who offer good value to their customers.

What’s your biggest challenge today and what do you envision as your biggest challenge in 1 year?
Our immediate challenge is getting our applications well integrated and adding more functionality that are business friendly. Our challenge over time will be to evangelize the value of Zoho applications against the bigger players.

Zoho is one of the ‘Graduate Circle’ participants of the conference.

Zoho features in PC World’s “The Web’s Most Useful Sites”

Ryan Singel at PC World looked at the best of the new Web services in 14 categories and has his results at “The Web’s Most Useful Sites“. While Zoho Writer won the best word processor, Zoho Sheet came runner-up in the spreadsheets category.

Zoho Writer features a hideable list of documents divided into sections for private, shared, and public documents, plus templates. Like Google Docs and ThinkFree, Zoho Writer can publish items directly to a blog and can save and import a range of text document formats, from Microsoft Word to HTML. With a plug-in for Microsoft Word, you can save from that application directly to your Zoho account.

It includes most of the common word processing features, from multiple undo to find-and-replace to extensive text formatting. You can also edit the HTML of a document, but the feature is so hidden you must use the search box to find it. Besting both Google and ThinkFree overall, Zoho handles multiple documents in a single window via tabs and lets you embed a Zoho spreadsheet in a Writer document. Modifying the spreadsheet automatically updates the Writer files.

Zoho Sheet’s clear icon-based controls, snappy response, intuitive keyboard navigation, graphs, and sharing options (which let you decide who can read particular worksheets in a document) make this an excellent tool for collaboration. It should improve as Zoho adds real-time collaboration and integrates it with other office offerings.

Thanks to Ryan & PC World! And thanks to all you Zoho users whose continuous feedback suggestions have kept us doing the right things, making this possible! Expect more from Zoho in 2007.

Zoho Announcements - How about three of them?

Today, we announce three different additions to Zoho.

1. Zoho Plugin for Microsoft Office
2. Zoho APIs
3. Desktopize for Zoho (Download)

We are very excited about the plugin for Microsoft Office as this extends the Office functionality online offering mobility etc….or should I say ‘This is what Office Live is supposed to be’ ) The screenshot below may not do justice to its functionality. I recommend trying it out if you are a Microsoft Office user. Writer and Sheet connects in to Word and Excel respectively.

Opening Zoho files in MS Office.jpg Zoho-plug-in-open.jpg

Zoho APIs is our first major step towards opening up our applications to be integrated into other services. With these well defined APIs, other web apps can now integrate closely with Zoho applications.

Desktopize, our partner customized their offering for Zoho making our applications behave more like a desktop application. If you like desktop shortcuts, quick tray access, Drag-n-drop documents into Zoho apps, I recommend installing this application.

More detailed posts about each of these releases will follow. Do drop us a line about your views on these announcements.

Update :

# Techcrunch covered this Zoho update. Thanks to Natali & Mike!

# For details on Zoho API, see the Zoho API developer guide
