Bandwidth.com invests in FreePBX GUI for Asterisk

Bandwidth.com has just made an investment in FreePBX, the popular front-end interface to Asterisk-based distros. I discussed this news with Philippe Lindheimer just a couple hours ago. One of the questions I asked was if Bandwidth.com would get "preferred treatment" within the FreePBX interface, since Bandwidth.com offers SIP trunking.

Obviously, if FreePBX gives Bandwidth.com a prominent position in the GUI or they make it "easier" to configure FreePBX (i.e. plug-n-play) that could be a huge boon to Bandwidth.com Philippe said that that isn't part of the investment announcement being made today, however, that is something they are looking at.

Intel cuts power cords with wireless power system

Note:  Very interesting technology but I do not even want to think about possible health effects.  If they can light a bulb (Most likely LED Light Bulb) across the room then I would want to see what effect that could have on me and you with those waves passing through us.  We already have cell, wi-fi, wimax, microwave, bluetooth.  Even with that it is very cool to think about.

Intel on Thursday showed off a wireless electric power system that analysts say could revolutionize modern life by freeing devices from transformers and wall outlets. Intel chief technology officer Justin Rattner demonstrated a Wireless Energy Resonant Link as he spoke at the California firm's annual developers forum in San Francisco.

AT&T Sets 3G iPhone Pricing

Note:  I will be upgrading day 1.  I can't stand the  EDGE network.  The name serves it right because everytime I use it, I feel like I am on the edge of the network.

The 8-GB 3G iPhone will only cost customers $199 if they sign up for a two-year contract, AT&T said Tuesday. AT&T also revealed voice and data plans and what customers need to do to be "iReady" when Apple's 3G second-generation iPhone hits the streets July 11. "We can't wait to offer iPhone 3G to our customers, and we want to make sure the buying process is as easy as possible," said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO of AT&T's wireless unit, in a statement. "Considering all the great new features of iPhone 3G, we think our pricing and monthly plans present a tremendous value for consumers and businesses alike."

iPhone 3G Plans for Rogers Wireless Officially Announced

We were teased with so-called leaked memos, telling us that there would be unlimited data for $30. It was understandable that you needed to pair with this a qualifying voice plan, but we were given the impression that good times were coming. Today's announcement is a step in the right direction, but at the same time, it's also one big slap in the face.

3G iPhone Will Pressure Prices Of Smartphones

The new iPhone's feature enhancements, openness to third-party applications and AT&T-subsidized starting price of $199 will put heavy pressure on the sales and prices of other-brand smartphones, and that's bad news for consumer electronics retailers who continue to be excluded from the iPhone's distribution channels, said analysts and retailers.

Fonality Signs Distribution Deals With Dell & JMI Telecom

Note:  Is it just me but why people keep calling PBXtra "Fonality's Open Source Software"?  IT IS THE ASTERISK OPEN SOURCE PBX PLATFORM.  Just because you made a GUI and did some basic integration with other open source applications does not mean you can just take credit away from the people made the most valuable piece of code outside of the O.S.  I hope they are submitting bugs so we are progressing the platform ahead in general.  Guess is shows you what slick marketing can do for you.

Fonality, a maker VoIP phone systems for small and mid-size businesses, has selected JMI Telecom to distribute its PBXtra VoIP-capable phone system. In addition, Dell  announced that it will begin bundling Fonality's open-source software with its enterprise servers.

Call for Speakers at Bob 2.0

Friends,

In April, I'm organizing a conference here in Sweden about the new IP Communications platform - SIP, Instant messaging, audio, video, text.  Open Standards, Open Source. Asterisk is part of a new platform that we're building. The new version, 1.4, integrates with Jabber and there's a lot of good examples on new applications that integrate Asterisk with FaceBook, SugarCRM and flowers... :-)

The conference is named BOB 2.0 - or "the IP Communications Technology Summit".

Read more on: http://www.ipcsummit.com

I'm looking for speakers with interesting ideas or stories - new applications with combinations of VoIP, IM, location, multimedia or just clever solutions with text messaging integrated with the new platforms... The conference will have a lot of interesting people as speakers. Both myself and Philippe Sultan (INRIA, France) will participate from the Asterisk developers group.

If you have an idea, drop me an e-mail at oej [at] edvina.net

At the end of the conference, on friday April 4th, I will run an Asterisk Community Meeting for everyone working with Asterisk, building systems, hacking, porting, integrating.

Looking forward to your mails!

Have a nice weekend!

Regards,
/Olle
