I found this chart very useful in spelling out some of the arguments, in this case the pros and cons of open source in a K-12 environment.

*Verty* interesting idea, building Linux disto customized for education, in this case using Ubuntu, and hence Debian, as the base. There is also a wiki. Edubuntu has been around since at least 2005. Should investigate further.
