FLAC or Free Lossless Audio Codec is a streamable audio codec that compresses and decompresses audio files without losing any data.

Because it is a lossless codec, it typically cannot compress as well as popular lossy codecs such as AAC, MP3, or Ogg – nevertheless FLAC is capable of compressing a CD by up to 50%.

The FLAC project includes development on a number of sub components: reference libraries, a command line tool for encoding and decoding FLAC files, a command line tool for editing FLAC files’ metadata, as well as plugins for numerous applications including Winamp and XMMS.

The reference libraries (libFLAC, libFLAC++) are available under the terms of the GPL.
