Microsoft: OpenOffice better than Google Apps

Seems OpenOffice.org has Microsoft's attention. I must say I think Ballmer misses the point of Google Docs here, which I use in addition to OO.o not instead of it. It's the ODF that makes the difference...

The Market Loves Linux (That's Why It's Thriving) by Daniel Coleman

Was it true that Linux could be functional, user-friendly, even aesthetically pleasing? My gut reaction was that it wasn't possible. Operating systems are complex animals, and they need constant tinkering and improvement by professionals to function. They need commercial support and proprietary business models. Sure, Windows had its issues, but could a bunch of unorganized programmers working in their free time really do better? Microsoft, welcome to the UNIX accessibility neighborhood!

Seems Microsoft wants to join in with the accessibility work at Gnome that Sun originally led, using Novell as a proxy so that nasty GPL code doesn't sully them. Good to have them along, and way overdue.

Microsoft claims software like Linux violates its patents

Microsoft claims that Linux violates 235 of its patents. Really? And it wants Linux developers and users to pay royalties. Really now.

Port 25

I got the chance to meet many extremely smart developers last month at SambaXP, the annual Samba developer conference. After attending I’m convinced that the Samba team knows more about how Windows networking works than most Microsoft developers...

Microsoft's New Mantra: Choice Is Good

Glynn is spot on here. Having failed to win by killing all the others, the new plan is to win by leveraging the monopoly.
