Firebird is a relational database that offers ANSI SQL-92 and SQL-2003 features. It runs on Linux and various Unix platforms, as well as on Windows. The project was first started at Borland, as a fork from their open source database project InterBase, that later closed its source.

Firebird is a competitor to MySQL and PostgreSQL as an open source database server solution, but is generally less well known than its two competitors. One thing is is noted for however is excellent internationalization support.
