FreeBSD Frequently Asked Questions [freebsd.org]

The semi-official FAQ maintained on the FreeBSD.org website contains a tonne of useful information, particularly about hardware and compatibility. It should be one of the first places you look for answers to your questions.

Setting up a FreeBSD Firewall with IPFILTER [schlacter.net]

This is one of the best descriptions I have seen in a long time on setting up a FreeBSD server to act as a NAT server and firewall. It goes through the processes of:

  • Setting up the operating system from scratch
  • Battening down the hatches for security
  • Setting up cvsup and other tools to build the latest kernel with the latest fixes.
  • Configuring the Firewall
  • Setting up an Intrusion Detection System (aide)
The tutorial is written for FreeBSD 5.x versions.

The FreeBSD Handbook [freebsd.org]

This is one of the authoritative sources of information for FreeBSD users and administrators. It covers a full range of topics including:

  • Installation
  • Basic Usage
  • FreeBSD's Ports
  • Getting Started with X/Windows
  • System Administration (Printing, Tuning, Kernel Compilation, etc.)
Amazingly, it is kept reasonably up to date and is well written.
