Our Season of Usability project for this Summer has finally come to a close, and we couldn't be happier with the results! Jakob Hilden worked with the Gallery team and Katrin Goetzer from OpenUsability to work on improving the image upload tools of Gallery. He did a comparative analysis, created mockups for a new image upload tool, and documented his entire project in our documentation site. At our annual developer meet-up, Jakob joined with us discussing the future of the project, and has decided to stick around and help us out with whatever comes next. (More on this in a future story!) This fall, he is mentoring two usability projects related to Gallery at a design course at the University of Michigan's School of Information.
You can find Jakob's full report on openusability.org.
Gallery 2.3 RC2 is now available for download! This is second and last release candidate before Gallery 2.3 will be complete. A release candidate helps users like you test out new features and provide feedback so that the final version has as many possible issues resolved. This release candidate includes the same security fixes as Gallery 2.2.6, so anyone using RC1 is strongly encouraged to upgrade to RC2. We have 6 different packages for you to choose from. You can read all about it on our Gallery 2 Download Page.
As always before you ask for help, please, please read the README --> README and the installation docs -- we've made an effort to answer all of your questions there. Also consider looking at the known issues. Upgrading is quick and easy. There are a few things you should know first so be sure to scan the upgrading instructions. Then head on over to the Gallery 2.3-RC-2 Forum Topic and let us know what you think!
Thanks for your continued support! Read on for more details...
Gallery 2.2.6 is now available for download. This release fixes critical security issues, no new features have been added. Users of all previous Gallery 2 versions are strongly encouraged to upgrade to version 2.2.6 as soon as possible! The Gallery team thanks Alex Ustinov and Hanno Boeck for reporting the security issues through the right channels and will reward them with a well deserved security bounty.
Since 2.2.6 is a security release, it shares the same installation requirements as 2.2.5. If you haven't upgraded to 2.2.x yet, please review the Gallery 2.2 release notes for highlights of changes and the requirements. Read on for more details and upgrade instructions.
After many months of refinement on the alpha versions, Gallery 1.6 Release Candidate 2 is here. This is the second of at least 2 Release Candidates before Gallery 1.6 will be release and recommended for production sites. A release candidate helps users like you test out new features and provide feedback so that the final version has as many possible issues resolved. Please notice that while this release comes with some great new features (e.g. Group Support, Captcha), it contains incompatible changes with older versions of Gallery 1.
This release introduces large changes to CSS and layout, which are incompatible with any previous Gallery 1.x installation. None of your modifications of your Gallery 1.5.x will work in Gallery 1.6! You can of course use your current albums and photos etc, but we suggest a fresh install and then port your mods over. We encourage you to try it out and report any problems you have because the more people who give us feedback, the better the final product will be. You can get Gallery 1.6-RC1 from the download page on SourceForge.
This release also includes the same security fixes as Gallery 1.5.8 and Gallery 1.5.9 so if you are using one of the Gallery 1.6 alpha releases or first release candidate, we highly recommend that you upgrade to Gallery 1.6-RC2 to protect your installation.
Gallery 1.5.9 is now available for download. This release fixes several security issues.
This version also resolves a handful of bugs found in Gallery 1.5.8. We strongly recommend that all users of Gallery 1.5.8 and earlier upgrade to this release to protect your Gallery installation. You can download Gallery 1.5.9 from the Gallery 1 download page on SourceForge. Upgrade instructions are available on our documentation site. Please discuss any issues specific to this release in this forum thread.
Usability is an area that we always seem to be a few steps behind in, but now is your chance to help us out to fix that. Two groups of students at the University of Michigan's School of Information are spending the semester working on ways to improve Gallery's usability, and they NEED your help! They are seeking some volunteers who are currently using Gallery and are willing to spend 30-45 minutes on the phone (or in person if you live in Ann Arbor, Michigan). As a small token of appreciation for your time, you'll get that warm fuzzy feeling for helping out an open source project and a $10 or more Amazon Gift Card.
This is your chance to voice your opinion and help thousands of Gallery users around the world create more enjoyable photo albums. Please email us the team at gallery [at] ctools.umich.edu with your phone number and available time slots for an interview. They will be conducting interviews between September 12 and September 24 2008. In addition, if you happen to be in Ann Arbor, Michigan, please let them know so they can conduct a face-to-face interview. If you have friends who use Gallery and have comments on their experiences, please refer this message to them. The team would love to talk to them as well.
If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to email them or visit their project website at http://www.adamatorres.com/gallery-project/.
Gallery 1.5.8 is now available for download. This release fixes many security issues including some serious security issues. It also resolves as well as a handful of bugs and reorganizes the internal API some (which is documented here). We strongly recommend that all users of Gallery 1.5.7 and earlier upgrade to this release to protect your Gallery installation. You can download Gallery 1.5.8 from the Gallery 1 download page on SourceForge. Upgrade instructions are available on our documentation site. Please discuss any issues specific to this release in this forum thread.

Vulnerabilities in web applications (like Gallery) are increasingly a sweet spot for attackers. We are very aware of this, and take the security of the Gallery project very seriously. In addition to our internal guidelines, processes and audits, we’ve had external security experts perform security audits of our code for the last several releases of Gallery 2.
Recently, we retained Gotham Digital Science (GDS) to perform security audits on Gallery 1 and 2. They are experts in application security, as it's basically all they do. The relationship we have built with GDS has proven valuable based on the results of the audits and we are looking forward to partnering with them on audits of future versions of Gallery. Please read on!
Gallery is pleased to participate in the 2008 Google Summer of Code. The Summer of Code is a program, funded by Google, to essentially give students a paid internship with Open Source projects.
The student application process has begun. If you would like to work on Gallery during the Summer of Code and are eligible to participate, take a look at our ideas page and talk to us, either in #gallery on irc.freenode.net or on our Summer of Code mailing list. The student application process runs from March 24-April 7, 2008. Be sure to apply before April 7 when the application process ends.
Due to resource constraints among our potential mentors, we are hoping to mentor only 1-3 students for this year's Summer of Code. We encourage potential students to apply to multiple mentoring organizations because of this.
We're excited to be included in this year's Season of Usability. This program pairs up someone from Gallery and a usability expert to guide a student (YOU!) in a usability related project for Gallery. We've come up with a pretty neat project idea: Redesigning our image upload tools, so check out the details and send in your application no later than April 17th. For your ~15 hours a week for 3 months, you'll receive a $1000 stipend and valuable experience working with usability and Open Source!

Informe.com is a "free web 2.0 online community for everyone" that has recently added Gallery to their offerings:
The Informe.com project was initially limited to forums hosting, but due to user demand, blog hosting and wiki functionality were added. Users then began requesting a special photo gallery mode to enhance the forums so we looked around for options and came across Gallery. After just enabling it as a forum addon, it became very popular and we decided to transform it into separate component from the forum, blogs and wiki. Thanks to your project's excellent structure we have implemented it quickly and easily, and in the past few weeks we have seen a large number of new portals with Gallery as the main component. Gallery completes our offerings so now millions of Informe users are able to create their own smart information portals and explore all of Gallery's advantages.
Are you using Gallery for something unique? Let us know by e-mailing us!

Gallery 2.2.3 is now available for download. This release adds no new features. It fixes critical application security bugs in the WebDAV and Reupload modules. If the WebDAV or Reupload modules are active in your Gallery we strongly recommend that you either disable them, upgrade them via Downloadable Plugins or perform a complete upgrade to version 2.2.3. Several of the leading PHP projects and web hosting providers are working together to push for PHP 5 adoption at GoPHP5.org. Gallery is pleased to announce that we will be joining them and committing to requiring PHP 5.2 to use versions of Gallery 2 released after February 5th, 2008.
Gallery 2.3 is currently in the works and will continue to support PHP 4.3 and security fixes will continue to be applied to Gallery 2.3.x for at least six months after our first release requiring PHP 5.2. However, if you want to use the cool new features in later releases, you should make sure that your web host supports PHP 5.2 and encourage them to upgrade if they don't! We feel that requiring PHP 5 is important for Gallery and will allow us to develop a better product for you! Read on for more details.
Gallery 2.2.2 is now available for download. As a minor stability release it adds no new features and includes bug fixes only.
Over 30 bugs have been fixed in this stability release. Some highlights are:

We asked and you responded! The needs of our users are key motivators for us, so given all of the very encouraging feedback from the Future of Gallery 1 story, we have decided to continue the development of Gallery 1 and release Gallery 1.6. Jens (aka Tim_j) and the whole Gallery team thank you for your continued support!
The next steps for Gallery 1.6 are a comprehensive security audit, followed by a release candidate. But before those can happen we need some help from you! Thus, this week is the Week of Gallery 1.6. During this week, we need your help picking through the latest pre-release of Gallery 1.6 to find bugs, inconsistencies, design issues and to notice any features you want to see that are missing. After trying to incorporate all of your feedback, the security audit will begin after which there will be no more major changes or features added. It's very important that you give your feedback now!
Please download the latest pre-release of 1.6 from Jens' archive and test it as much as you can. Post all the feedback you can provide in this Gallery 1.6 feedback thread so that the developers can respond to it and make Gallery 1.6 better for you. Thoughts about layout and design, bug reports, and any and all other comments are welcome!
A new and updated version of the Gallery Appliance has been made available. Thanks to the help of rPath, the new appliance includes Gallery 1.5.6 and Gallery 2.2.1.
Improvements include:
Go Download the appliance and be sure to check the documentation for more details.
For more details, please read on!
A few months back we released a preview for Gallery 1.6. This contained many new features including access keys, a template system, captcha support, and group support but it also is a dramatic change in the code and layout handling. To this date we have received almost no feedback on these new features. Without any feedback, it is hard for us to know if it still makes sense for us to release Gallery 1.6, especially in light of the fact that it is significantly different from Gallery 1.5. Please read on!
Gallery 1.5.6 is now available for download. This is primarily a bug fix release but also includes a couple of minor new features. Even though this release contains no security fixes, we recommend that all users of Gallery 1.5.5-pl1 and earlier upgrade to this release to be as bug free as possible. You can download 1.5.6 from the Gallery 1 download page on SourceForge. Upgrade instructions are available on our documentation site.
Gallery 2.2.1 (Double Double) is now available for download! In what has been close to a year of development, the Gallery team has packed this release full of new features and security enhancements. Major new features include: Downloadable Plugins which let you download, install, and upgrade modules and themes through the web interface; Dynamic Albums which let you set up albums based on keywords, ratings, and more; and WebDAV support for managing your photo library like a network hard drive with folders of images.
Changes between 2.2 and 2.2.1: Gallery 2.2.1 is a patch release to address four relatively minor issues in Gallery 2.2:
As a patch release, Gallery 2.2.1 does not contain any new features. Upgrading from 2.2 to 2.2.1 is quick and easy. Please read on for all the changes introduced in the major Gallery 2.2 release and for upgrade instructions from earlier versions...

We haven't yet seen a big interest in the 2007 Summer of Code. As you may be aware, Google has extended the student application deadline to 9:00 AM PDT on Tuesday, March 27, 2007. We'd like to encourage all interested students to apply before the deadline. We haven't yet seen very many applications so please don't wait until the last minute!
Students should feel free to submit their own project idea. In fact, we strongly suggest you submit your own project idea and have updated our ideas page to reflect this. You don't have to start from scratch - our "Create your own idea!" section has links to several areas with possible ideas. The Sample Ideas on our ideas page are just examples - they're not necessarily a higher priority than any other feature request.
We'd also like to encourage you to apply for multiple projects. We've seen several applications for the same project and we can only select one student for each project.
