wifiBSD

wifiBSD is a wifi router BSD distribution based on FreeBSD.

It supports Atheros, Ralink, Prism, and Lucent chips, supports IPsec, and IPv6 and can serve as a DNS server, a DHCP server, and a firewall. It also features LiveCD capability.

m0n0wall

m0n0wall is an all-in-one firewall based on FreeBSD. It is geared towards embedded PCs, but it also works on standard PCs.

FreeNAS

FreeNAS is a minimal FreeBSD distribution that provides NAS (network-attached storage) services: CIFS, FTP, NFS, and Software RAID. It may be booted and run from a USB flash disk, Compact Flash or CD-ROM.

Minimum system requirements are a PC with 128MB of RAM, a bootable CD-ROM drive, a network card and one or more hard disks. 256 MB of RAM is recommend for using iSCSI and 512MB if you are using version 0.7 with ZFS.

userdir: the end of /etc/passwd?

This a is a drop-in replacement for FreeBSD’s getpwent.c (4.x only) that uses an envdir-style directory (/etc/users) instead of the traditional /etc/passwd file for user authentication.

PC-BSD

PC-BSD is a free, open-source operating system based on FreeBSD, that uses a unique style of package management that is more similar to the Windows install process.

Overview

PC-BSD has as its goals to be an easy to install and use desktop OS, which is built on the FreeBSD operating system. To accomplish this, it currently has a graphical installation, which will enable even UNIX novices to easily install and get it running. It will also come with KDE pre-built, so that the desktop can be used immediately. Currently in development is a graphical software installation program, which will make installing pre-built software as easy as other popular operating systems.

FreeSBIE is a LiveCD based on the FreeBSD Operating system, or even easier, a FreeBSD-based operating system that works directly from a CD, without touching your hard drive.

FreeBSD is one of if not the most popular BSD, and serves as the basis for Apple’s Mac OS X operating system. FreeBSD is also quite commonly used on web servers, as it is known for reliability.
