gNewSense

A GNU/Linux distribution, that takes all the non-free blobs out of the popular Ubuntu distribution and makes it free.

Xubuntu

Xubuntu is a version of Ubuntu that uses XFCE instead of GNOME as a desktop environment. Typically this means you have a older/slower computer, or just want a very efficient desktop OS. Xubuntu can be run with just 1.5 Gigs of hard drive space and 64-128 MB of RAM.

It is similar to Kubuntu in that it is a derivative of Ubuntu for those who do not want to use GNOME.

Knoppix STD or Knoppix Security Tools Distribution is a liveCD security Linux Distribution that aims to include as many security tools as possible and expose them all via a slick interface.

PHLAK

PHLAK is a modular livecd security Linux distribution.

PHLAK comes with two light gui’s (fluxbox and XFCE4), many security tools, and a spiral notebook full of security documentation.

Pocket Linux

Pocket Linux is an almost minimal, one floppy linux system designed to quickly convert PC workstation into secure linux-based workstation using ssh to connect to remote host (other networking clients are also supported).

It supports bootp for determining host IP and other network parameters (there’s also manual configuration possible, but bootp is recommended).

Linspire

Linspire is a commercial Linux distribution and as such charges money for their releases. Parts of it are covered under the GPL but other parts including some code that Linspire has created is not covered under the GPL.

Linspire was once to be called Lindows, except Microsoft took exception to that. A project was started to distribute free binaries of Linspire called ‘Freespire’, however Linspire took exception to that, Freespire become known as SquiggleOS. SquiggleOS eventually shut down however as Linspire promises a community focused distribution also called Freespire.

knoppix

Knoppix is a liveCD Linux distribution, featuring automatic hardware detection and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI devices, and other peripherals.

Due to Knoppix’s excellent support for a wide array of hardware and Knoppix being one of the first livecd distributions, Knoppix has virtually become a byword for bootable cd and many derivative distributions have been established based on the work the Knoppix project has done.

Knoppix packages a wide variety of software, the contents of which depends on the version—the full DVD version packaged over 2500 projects. Knoppix, unlike some other linux distributions, packages some proprietary software in addition to free software packages.

Some of the notable packages that Knoppix packages are: KDE, XMMS, Firefox, OpenOffice, K3b, and the GIMP.

Tao Linux is based off of Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

monoppix

Monoppix is a LiveCD Linux distribution (based on Knoppix) that shows off Mono technology.
