Freespire

Freespire is a free community run version of the commercially oriented Linspire Debian-based linux distribution.

Originally, a 3rd party project called Freespire (later SquiggleOS) started a community build of the Linspire sources, which were not available for free binary download.

In response, Linspire started the official Freespire project, which is a community driven build with close ties to Linspire, much as Fedora-Core has close ties to its commercial counterpart RHEL.

There are two versions of Freespire planned, one release includes proprietary libraries licensed by Linspire such as WMA libraries, and the other release only includes open source components.

Linspire

Linspire is a commercial Linux distribution and as such charges money for their releases. Parts of it are covered under the GPL but other parts including some code that Linspire has created is not covered under the GPL.

Linspire was once to be called Lindows, except Microsoft took exception to that. A project was started to distribute free binaries of Linspire called ‘Freespire’, however Linspire took exception to that, Freespire become known as SquiggleOS. SquiggleOS eventually shut down however as Linspire promises a community focused distribution also called Freespire.
