What is Tagging?

Tagging is a really simple concept where people attach words to things to help categorize them, so that they can be found again.

In SWiK, tagging is done through space separated tags, which makes it easy to type a string of words to associate with a piece of content.

Wiki page names in SWiK are tags, so if you want to associate something with something, for example a project, you can just tag it the name of the project and it will appear on that project’s page. For example, if you write an article on issues with MythTV and KDE, you can tag it “KDE MythTV Issues”. It will then appear on the KDE and MythTV pages.

Combining Tags

Tags can be combined, to filter the results of a really common tag. If you want to see all the pages tagged Fedora-Core and MythTV, visit this URL: http://swik.net/Fedora-Core+MythTV. You can add as many terms to the end of a tag combination as you like.

Pages will also show the tags that can be used to filter under a heading called “Tags” on the left of the page. The relative size of the tags reflects the number of pages that have been tagged with the word.

Tags from RSS feeds will be imported too. This means that if you write a blog post on Gentoo and Portage and put it in Gentoo and Portage categories on your blog, when the blog is syndicated it will be syndicated into the Gentoo and Portage pages.
