Drizzle: A Lean Fork of MySQL is Generating Buzz

Sun Makes Open Source Announcements

Sun Microsystems has made a trio of open source developer-focused announcements at OSCON this week, including the availability of the Sun Web Stack -- an integrated enterprise-quality AMP ("Apache/MySQL/Perl or PHP") stack for Solaris and Linux. The Web Stack software includes the open source, standards-based software most commonly used for Web-tier application development and services.

A New Competitor to LCD

A pixel that uses a pair of mirrors to block or transmit light could lead to displays that are faster, brighter, and more power efficient than liquid crystal displays (LCDs). Researchers at Microsoft Research who published their novel pixel design in Nature Photonics say that their design is also simpler and easier to fabricate, which should make it cheaper.

Message Transformation, Splitting and Routing on Mule ESB using Smooks for Mule

The Smooks for Mule Project has released a 1.0 Beta of the Smooks for Mule module. Mule is a popular open source Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) and Smooks is a Java Framework/Engine for processing XML and non XML data (CSV, EDI, Java etc). Smooks for Mule enables Complex Message Transformation, Splitting and Routing using the Smooks Engine. The module has a Mule 1.x and Mule 2.x compatible version. Several examples are provided to demonstrate the module. Take a look at the release notes for a feature overview.

OMG - What has Yahoo Done ?

Yacrosoft or Michoo – too Icahnish? When America was once prosperous, not too long ago and most U.S. industries had at least a bright near-term economic future, the greedy class of American could enrich themselves privately, away from the media and general public – but, those times have changed. This recent statement in The Washington Post article says it all - “Icahn, who owns a 5 percent stake in Yahoo, emphasized he still believes a sale of all or part of Yahoo may still be the best way for the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company to lift its sagging stock price.” No mention whatsoever has been discussed publicly of what to fix that people don’t like about Yahoo that may be causing the lack of financial windfall that Carl Icahn believes he should benefit from by investing in Yahoo, the well liked consumer based Internet icon stock.

A distributed attack on SSH *nix boxes

Servers with open SSH ports have recently begun to come under hacker attack, which seems to be coordinated, although it is not automatically reported because the hackers employ a brute force attack from more than one machine.
