OpenBSD 4.4 seen in the wild

OpenBSD 4.4 cover

It's been just a bit over a month since pre-orders for 4.4 opened up and already the first sets have been spotted in the wild (OK, on my desk).

As is commonly known, those that order early, get the set before the actual release date. Keep that in mind for 4.5 and for now, if you haven't already, please place your order right away (International, Europe).

Remember, CD sales fund the continued development of OpenBSD and CD sets are the only place for those cool stickers!

NYCBSDCon 2008 Begins at the End of the Week!

George Rosamond reminds us that NYCBSDCon is just days away:

NYCBSDCon is an annual BSD Unix technical conference organized by the New York City *BSD User Group (NYC*BUG). Don't miss this great opportunity to expand your network amid the tumultuous economic environment.

The conference schedule is packed with some of the best and brightest of the *BSD projects, with topics ranging from file systems to the portable C compiler, not to mention an array of developer and systems administrator related meetings.

Editor's Note: This is a conference I look forward to, particularly since it's really the only one in the U.S.A. that has a strong OpenBSD presence. There will be quite a few OpenBSD developers, so come out and join us for couple days of presentations (and beer).

EuroBSDcon 2008 - registrations are open

Wim Vandeputte (wvdputte@) writes to tell us that EuroBSDcon registration is open.

For the OpenBSD crowd there are a few highlights worth mentioning:

  • Matthieu Herrb:
Input handling in wscons and X.Org

  • Edd Barrett:
Modern Typesetting on BSD (LaTeX on OpenBSD ;-)

  • Michael Dexter:
Zen and the Art of Multiplicity Maintenance: An applied survey of BSD-licensed multiplicity strategies from chroot to mult

  • Constantine A. Murenin:
    OpenBSD Hardware Sensors Framework

  • Tutorial day: (full day)
    Peter N. M. Hansteen:

The 2008 Slackathon event.

As mentioned before, the Swedish OpenBSD crowd got yet another chance to meet for a OpenBSD conference this autumn.

Here is my own view on the event:

[c2k8]:Hackathon Summary Part 10

c2k8 General Hackathon (Part 10) - June 7-15, 2008, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

I would like to diverge a little from past articles and give a little background on how these stories evolve and eventually get published; a little behind the scenes perspective, if you will. The output of these stories has slowed since the c2k8 hackathon. At the rate I'm going, c2k9 will be just around the corner after I'm done.

How it’s made: OpenBSD

Undeadly has an brief, interesting article up, written by Mitja Muženič, describing the OpenBSD releasing process.  Worthwhile reading if you are involved in any sort of release cycle.

DragonFlyBSD: DragonFly BSD Digest

How OpenBSD is made

Mitja Muženič submitted a nice story about the OpenBSD release cycle, here it is...

With every new release more and more new users are attracted to Puffy and invariably there are questions regarding the OpenBSD release cycle and process. Although this is already well documented in the FAQ, let's take a look at what it takes to bring a new release to life.

Please read on for the rest of Mitja's story:

European pre-orders for 4.4 are open!

A recent commit by Theo de Raadt (deraadt@) reveals that the European store is now open for OpenBSD 4.4 pre-orders.

In order to make the project able to hold conferences such as the annual Hackathons and other events please help support it.

If you haven't already, or you've been waiting to place your EU order, now is the time!

NetFlow support with pflow(4)

Henning Brauer (henning@) has just committed a new pseudo-device to OpenBSD-current. The pflow(4) interface exports IP accounting data over UDP that is compatible with NetFlow version 5. Please continue to read Henning's commit message and a brief introduction to pflow(4) usage.

NYCBSDCon 2008 Registration Open

George R. writes in about this next month's BSD conference in New York City:

We are proud to announce the release of the speaker's presentations and that registration is now open for NYCBSDCon 2008. The conference will be held at Columbia University on October 11 and 12 in Manhattan.

The speaker line-up is an impressive list of developers and systems administrators from all of the BSD projects.

Editor's Note: This is a very OpenBSD-friendly conference. Attendees are advised to register early to reserve a seat!

Update: There will also be a PF BoF session during Saturday's lunch break.
