Building RIAs on J2EE Foundations

"If you're still using HTML, JavaScript, complicated server deployments, and other technologies that don't "just work," try downloading the free Adobe Flex 3 SDK, a trial edition of Adobe Flex Builder 3 Professional, and the free developer edition of Adobe ColdFusion 8 to begin building better web applications with fewer headaches."

Silverlight/.NET vs Flash/Flex (or not) and My Silverlight Wishlist

I was going to present an analogy using different types of cars, but more often than not, the analogy breaks down on some key point or carries some baggage that just doesn’t, and folks start picking apart the analogy and assuming it still applies to the real discussion. The only way to get a perfect analogy is to just talk about what you’re talking about :). So anyway… Lately, I’ve seen a lot of Flash vs. Silverlight posts on various sites. (To the person who thinks this is just about your post, it isn’t >). I usually do my best to stay out of those, because I think the “vs” story is too deep for any one person to accurately portray, but once in a while, I step in.

Expressing Asynchronous Control Flows With Program Translation

A paper by Thibaud Lopez Schneider shows that we can transform a function written with conventional control structures and synchronous function calls into a set of callback functions that work in an asychronous environment, such as an RIA that uses XHR. Longer-term, tools may evolved that will automate this process, to simplify the development of correct asynchronous applications.

Curl is now in the Top 4

It's been rewarding watching the Curl customer base grow and seeing its adoption gaining more speed as each month passes by. When people talk about the leading RIA solutions (i.e. Flex, Silverlight, JavaFX) you will almost always here them talk about Curl as well. For example, in eWeek last week (print edition only) Darryl Taft listed Curl ( along with Adobe Flash and AIR, Microsoft Silverlight, Sun JavaFX and Mozilla Prism) as leading the pack among top competitors in the RIA space. The RIA community understands that Curl is a powerful solution for the enterprise and a top contender in the RIA market place.

JavaFX SDK on Mac OS X with 32-bit systems (yeah, SoyLatte...)

As you know, the JavaFX SDK has been released a week ago for Windows and Mac OS X running on a 64-bit processor. The reason for the latter requirement is that JavaFX needs Java 6 and Apple's Java 6 is only available for 64-bit processors. So? What if you own, like me, a MacBook Pro Core Duo from the 32-bit generation? Need to switch to Windows or Linux? Btw, be aware that while Sun hasn't released an official Linux SDK, Weiqi Gao explained how to tweak the JavaFX SDK for Mac OS X to run under Linux.

IronNails = Silverlight + IronRuby + Patterns

If you already pay attention to the IronRuby dev group and are on the distribution list, apologies for the dupe. I’ve just got back from a camping trip and rifling through all my emails now. I checked in on the IronRuby group and noticed a new project emerging from someone. It’s from Ivan Porto Carrero and he calls it IronNails. It was previously called something else (quite frankly I liked the other name better myself) but there was already a project named after his chosen name.
