The eyeOS worldwide community is proud to announce the immediate availability of eyeOS 1.7 Lars, becoming the new production version of the eyeOS Web Operating System.
Even though the development was scheduled to be focused on eyeOS 2.0 after the 1.6 release, the decision of continue the 1.x branch to improve both the system and base applications was taken. From that moment, more than 1.000 commits have been done in the eyeOS Subversion Repository for its development, making the today’s release a reality.
The new eyeOS 1.7 Lars includes some new major features and lots of minor improvements for the global system usage, such as the ability to have more than one system administrator / maintainer, the support for managing Office files under Windows servers, many new features in eyeOS’ calendar, and much more.
The new version also comes with a completely updated base repository with the latest apps, languages and themes. It can be easily accessed from Applications -> Install Applications.
You can see the full release notes, installation notes and known issues here.
As usual, you can download the new release from our downloads page. You can also use it without installing anything from the public eyeOS Server. Please note that the new version includes a new installer and updater, so please, read the install notes and update notes before attempting to install a new eyeOS server.
We are proud to announce the availability of eyeSync, the eyeOS Synchronization Tool, for Microsoft Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP and Vista.
It’s a portable application, and all you need to do to get it running is to uncompress it somewhere in your system (or even inside a Pendrive) and launch eyeSync. The first time you launch it, it will ask you to configure your account (from Preferences). If you want to use it with the Public Server, just put www.eyeos.info in the Server field, and your username/password in the other fields.
You can download it from here and from the Downloads page.
You can add folders form your system to keep synchronized with your eyeOS by pressing Add Folder and choosing the local folder you want to keep synchronized with your eyeOS, and the eyeOS folder you want the contents to go to. Please note that the eyeOS folder must exist, and it must be empty.
When you add a folder, its content will start to synchronize and you can open your eyeOS session and check that your local contents are being imported. Note that the system will detect every change you do on the synchronized folders (such as file edits).
It’s an early version and feedback will be appreciated on the eyeOS Forums.
As many of you noticied we forgot to include the Skeleton gadget in the jaws-complete tarball of 0.7.2. This issue caused some (fatal) errors with users who wanted to upgrade with the Skeleton gadget already installed.
We've uploaded the tarball again including the Skeleton gadget.
*NOTE: This is not a bug fix release, we are just uploading the jaws-complete tarball again with the Skeleton gadget*. There's no need to update again or use this tarball if you didn't have this problem.
We are proud to announce the second official eyeOS theme, available at the eyeOS Applications Community: The eyeOS Light Desktop.
The Light Desktop theme is a lightweight theme that removes the effects-based menus and adds a new left bar on the desktop (that can be easily edited) with the favorite apps and places, with a new menu that shows all the applications.
It will come bundled with eyeOS 1.6 as an optional theme (the default one will be the current one with some improvements).
If you have an eyeOS server, you can download and install this theme easily, following the instructions at the theme’s download page. You can also take a look at the other great eyeOS Themes available there.
If you use the eyeOS Public Server or any other public server that has this theme installed, you can follow this instructions to enable the Light Desktop:
If you want your desktop to load faster, you can remove eyeDock and eyeDesk_extras from your Autorun Commands. Just re-add them when you want to switch to the default theme again.
If you are having problems enabling this theme, you can check the common problems and solutions at them theme download page.
We would love to know where are you using eyeOS, and which apps do you use on the system, to prepare the next releases acording to eyeOS main uses. Please take 20 seconds to answer this two polls:
We will be adding a new poll to resume the main whishes and blueprints for eyeOS 1.6 (add yours at this Forums’ topic) so the Roadmap of eyeOS 1.6 will be built with the most voted ideas.
Thanks!

We are releasing the second stable version of the 0.7 family: 0.7.1.
This release fixes many things like:
Requirements
* PHP >= 4.3.6 * MySQL >= 3.23.49 (if you use MySQL) * Apache 1.3, Apache 2, Cherokee >> 0.4.29 (under fcgi) and IIS
Suggestions
During this bug-squashing stage I found a little problem with Dreamhost (cause I've some accounts with them).
If you want to have links like: index.php/blog/show/32 (passing params via the pathinfo) you can't do that on dreamhost if you are using PHP 4.2.x with CGI. If you really want to use those links, just change to PHP 5.2.x (cgi or fcgi) otherwise your links will be like index.php?blog/show/32 (note that we replace the first / with a ?).

We’re proud to announce the new eyeOS User Manual (PDF - 25 pages), a handbook which explains how to use eyeOS, from the creation of a new account to the usage of the common applications and system customization.
It’s thought to be printed and consulted when using eyeOS, by end-users, who may not have technical knowledges.
The new user manual is an important step on working with eyeOS in a production environment, as a first help for the eyeOS users.
Download the eyeOS User Manual (PDF file)
If you are interested in translating the eyeOS Manual to your language, please contact us at team@eyeos.org and we’ll send you the necessary files. Thanks!
