What Getting Buzzed Says About Yahoo

The battle over Yahoo’s search business as witnessed over the last few days seems both ridiculous and petty. And it takes the attention away from what is Yahoo’s true value: a media aggregation platform. Yahoo is the place a lot of people — some 400 million — visit to get their news, sports scores and email. I have always liked that business, and yesterday I experienced, first-hand, the enormous strength of Yahoo.

A story by Judi Sohn, who edits WebWorkerDaily, one of our growing portfolio of blogs, was featured on the home page of Yahoo last night. The story got voted up via Yahoo’s Buzz, a service akin to Digg, except much more powerful.

In a few hours, the story about what to expect when switching from a BlackBerry to an iPhone was viewed over 200,000 times and attracted over 350 comments. Now that’s a lot of traffic — but more importantly, a gigantic amount of engagement displayed by Yahoo visitors. The traffic sent our way by Yahoo was many times the traffic we get from, say, Digg or StumbleUpon.

At the risk of repeating myself, Yahoo’s core business now is “audience.” The company, instead of trying to out-Google Google, needs to beat itself by figuring out new ways to keep the audience growing. The first step is, of course, acknowledging that it is a content company. The next one: figuring out new engagement and audience-grabbing ways.

Introducing the new look GigaOM

For the past 12 months, I have often asked you, our community, how we could improve the site — how we could make it better, cleaner and simpler to use. And each time, you have responded with great suggestions. We took all those suggestions and passed them on to the folks at SilverOrange, the design firm that has done the Mozilla and Digg sites, to come up with something simple, utilitarian and classy.

Of course, the new redesign had to reflect some of our business realities — incorporating content from our network sites, for example, and including advertising without being too suffocating. It took a while, but we finally got it done.

logo_big.gifThe new, two-column design features our new, more formal logo, designed by Arno Gelfi, a friend of ours from Red Herring and Business 2.0. And it addresses our readers’ biggest complaint — that the main content block was too constrained and narrow.

A couple of points about the new look: We have created a featured posts block right at the top, which allows us to showcase some of our long-form writing. Readers kept telling us that trying to find these stories was quite frustrating. Of course, we as writers want to get read, and we think the new design makes it easier for you to find these “featured” stories, which are also available via a featured story RSS feed. The new design is also — at least in my opinion — open and airy, giving me an opportunity to put up shorter posts, quick links or random musings.

The GigaOM network stories are available at the bottom of the page, and hopefully you will sign up for our network RSS feed to get the latest from what our diligent team of writers is crafting throughout the day.

The focus of this redesign is simplification. Hopefully you agree. Of course, your feedback is invaluable and we eagerly await your suggestions.

(We are going to be tweaking it over the weekend, so bear with us while we make the changes and perfect it. Of course, let us know if you capture any bugs. Also check out the new look WebWorkerDaily)

Is Web 2.0 a time sink?

As web workers, most of us are steeped in Web 2.0 throughout our working day (never mind that we can’t agree on what “Web 2.0″ means). Many of us have embraced online applications from Google, Yahoo, and elsewhere to do the bulk of our work, and we rely on a mishmash of social media sites to stay in touch with our peers and build our extended networks. But this connectivity comes at a cost: the internet is filled with bright, shiny distractions. Though we think of the web as a massive productivity enhancer, for some people it’s also a great time sink. Continue Reading

WebWorkerDaily, for the Web 2.0 Worker

Om Malik’s blog network is starting to take shape as he launches WebWorkerDaily this afternoon. The new site is a blog for the distributed worker, where the office is wherever their laptop happens to be. Cell phones, Skype, laptops and other tools have made it possible for an entire generation of workers to do their thing outside of an actual office. This blog is for them. The writers will give advice on the newest tools to make your virtual office more efficient. Om calls this a lifestyle blog, for anyone who works outside of the walls of cubicles.

I think the design is magnificent, with its play on the Soviet Union’s hammer and sickle emblem. Web 2.0 workers unite! It’s time for a revolution.
