Xgl is [[David Reveman]]'s [[X]] server architecture that uses [[glitz]]/[[OpenGL]] to let X use 3D graphics, similar to Aqua effects in [[OSX]] and [[Windows|Windows Vista]] Aero 3D effects. ({{Photos Tagged XGL|Xgl screenshots}})

Xgl is not usable without hardware that offers good OpenGL performance, as it relies on hardware accelerated 3d effects.

Xgl works by launching [[X]], then (on NVIDIA cards) loading libglx as an extension to X. This allows X to provide direct OpenGL functic.
