Xgl is David Reveman’s X server architecture that uses glitz/OpenGL to let X use 3D graphics, similar to Aqua effects in OSX and Windows Vista Aero 3D effects. (Xgl screenshots)
Xgl is not usable without hardware that offers good OpenGL performance, as it relies on hardware accelerated 3d effects.
Xgl works by launching X, then (on NVIDIA cards) loading libglx as an extension to X. This allows X to provide direct OpenGL functic.
