[from amaah] Impact of urban agriculture on malaria vectors in Accra, Ghana

study shows that urban malaria transmission is ongoing in Accra and that the EIR seems increased in urban areas where irrigated farming takes place. In addition, the urban setting seems to pose a number of unique challenges to malaria control that need further investigation, e.g. anophelines may be adapting to more polluted larval habitats, may be more exophilic than in rural settings thereby decreasing the efficacy of IRS and the intensive use of pesticides in urban agriculture is likely to increase the speed with which insecticide resistance develops.
