Social.FM, Formerly Mercora, Shuts Down
Mercora, an early entrant into the social music and music search space that recently rebranded itself as Social.FM, has shut down and suspended operations. After being tipped off by a source, I tried reaching the company’s executives, but haven’t heard from them. The site has gone black.
“The Company is unfortunately no longer in business and therefore cannot continue its service to you. Regards,. Mercora, Inc.” Over on the Social.FM home page, the company said “To our Valued Customers,. We regret to inform you and apologize for this inconvenience, but Social.FM will be shutting down the system on July 31st, 2008.” The MySpace widgets have also gone on the blink.
The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company launched in June 2005 and had raised $5 million from Norwest Venture Partners. It was started by Srivats Sampath, the former CEO of McAfee.com, and launched with a pretty nifty P2P radio software client.
Social.FM had planned to make money by selling ads next to music searches that were conducted on its P2P network. It eventually lost out to more visible competitors, like Pandora and Last.fm, and changed its strategy. Like many other music-focused startups, the company had faced some tough times when the royalty rates for webcasting music on the Internet were raised.

I think it only makes sense that Mp3 players Destroyed the market of Cds. What is happening is The media that has dominated the market finally has competition as a new media to listen to. If musicans would cater to these mp3 player sites to include there music for certain models with exclusive music only on the mp3 player you might get some people to bite.

EMI, one of the global music majors, is shutting down some of its offices in Asia. Offices in Thailand and Singapore have already been shuttered, while regional headquarters in Hong King are ready for the grim reaper, Music 2.0 reports.
All of this is part of the right-sizing moves EMI has been making; it had earlier announced plans to cut thousands of jobs worldwide. The big cuts in the region are going to come in June, Music 2.0 Blog asserts. It also offers up an in-depth analysis of how global music companies blew the big Asian opportunity: ringtones.
EMI’s move makes me wonder how long before the other three music labels — Warner, Universal and Sony-BMG — follow suit. EMI over the past few years has become the canary in the coal mine: It’s not the biggest of the music majors, and as a result, has been open to take more draconian measures to survive the music industry meltdown. Whether it was signing up for DRM-free music or ruthlessly cutting its payroll, EMI has been ahead of the curve, only to see its bigger brethren follow suit.

It is thus frustrating to note the column inches devoted to so-called innovative concepts in the US and Europe like Spiral Frog, Q-trax, Imeem and last.fm and their courting of major labels when Asian label executives themselves had been rebuffed for years by their head offices to approve similar deals in their home countries.

Amazon Now Offers Warner DRM-Free Downloads
Amazon.com (AMZN) has added DRM free downloads from Warner Music Group to its MP3 store, something Apple is yet to offer on its iTunes music store. With 2.9 million songs available for download, the Amazon MP3 store is a very legitimate player in the digital music business, and a true competitor to Apple, which has 5.5 million songs available but majority are protected by Apple’s own DRM.
I liked the download service when it first launched, and have often bought music from them, though it still doesn’t come close to the convenience and ease of use of the Apple’s iTunes.
