An Open Source Closed Model project which will allow anyone anywhere to access and contribute to developing a structured body of knowledge on Side Effects related to medication. This portal will be provided to everyone for free.

We will be developing this portal utilizing Ruby On Rails

The portal will combine an application devoted to data collection and a wiki as a way of presenting data in a user friendly report.

Wiki – We will utilize the wiki to allow patients to define side effects in a way that makes sense to them.

Application – The application will walk the patients/users step by step through the creation of a profile. In the profile they will fill out a series of forms which will collect information on their physical characteristics, illnesses, medications and finally side effects. The Illnesses medications and side effects data will be retrieved from the wiki (It is a key feature of the application that the user(s) defines the side effects in a way that makes sense to them).

Once the user has completed a profile they will then be able to print off a report which will show how many other people worldwide with physical characteristics and on the same medication also experience the side effect(s) they have listed. We will also allow for users to query side effects independent of medications at a future date.

Back to the Wiki – As users provide information on side effects this information will then be fed back to the wiki. We will provide limited information at the bottom of each side effect regarding the number of people who experience this side effect and the medications they are taking which cause this.
