littleBits

littleBits is an opensource library of discrete electronic components pre-assembled in tiny circuit boards. Just as Legos allow you to create complex structures with very little engineering knowledge, littleBits are simple, intuitive, space-sensitive blocks that make prototyping with sophisticated electronics a matter of snapping small magnets together. With a growing number of available modules, littleBits aims to move electronics from late stages of the design process to its earliest ones, and from the hands of experts, to those of artists, makers and designers.

[from amaah] Solution, or Mess? A Milk Jug for a Green Earth

on the redesign of milk jugs wherein we trade off increased efficiency and ease of distribution (and, buzzword alert, sustainability ergo reduced fuel and shipment costs) against usability - users tend to spill and need to learn new pouring techniques

[from amaah] Functional Fenestration, Inc.

Fodder for a novel or short story. windows, hinges, lift and slide, rollers etc. The language and the name! Overheard the sales reps and engineers on the subway. Fascinating. perhaps something like Colson Whitehead. Functional Fenestration Inc!

New York City Waterfalls!

New York City Waterfalls!

Cool, New York City is going bonkers with waterfalls, even one on a bridge!

Public Art Fund, working in partnership with Tishman Construction Corporation, engaged a team of almost 200 design, engineering and construction professionals to build the Waterfalls, which are constructed with building elements that are ubiquitous throughout New York. Actual construction scaffolding forms the backbone of the Waterfalls, and pumps will cycle water from the East River to the top of each structure before it falls back into the river. Following the completion of The New York City Waterfalls in October, all scaffolding will be re-used in subsequent construction projects.

FlowDesigner (visual programming, support for openCV)

In some ways, it is similar to both Simulink and LabView, but is hardly a clone of either. FlowDesigner features a RAD GUI with a visual debugger. Although FlowDesigner can be used as a rapid prototyping tool, it can still be used for building real-time a
