freight-forwarding

Article on the use of Open Source software by a freight forwarder

Freight Forwarding is the process of arranging the international transport of freight by the most appropriate mode of transport (ie Road Rail Sea Air).

The Freight Forwarder may put multiple shipments together to specific destinations on a regular basis (this is known as a Consolidation, LCL , or groupage service) and move these together in equipment belonging to the prime carrier (Shipping Line or Airline).

When exporters (also called shippers or consignors) or importers (also called consignees) need a freight forwarder you can get a list of member companies from the trade associations:

The international association for surface Freight Forwarders is FIATA.

The international association for air Freight Forwarders is IATA.

The UK national association is BIFA.
