Free software - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

* ... to run the program for any purpose. * ... to study and modify the program. * ... to copy the program so you can help your neighbor. * ... to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits.

freedom for users'- which users did you mean, exactly?

Luis Vila latches on to the same issue with defining "software freedom" that I tried to get at when I differentiated between "co-developers" and "deployer-developers" in the context of open source.

The Torvalds Transcript: Why I 'Absolutely Love' GPL Version 2 - Technology News by InformationWeek

Linus Torvalds's objections to the GPLv3 license make a lot of sense, even if you (like me) agree with the Free Software Foundation's basic political stance.

free-software

“Free software” is a matter of liberty, not price. To understand the concept, you should think of “free” as in “free speech”, not as in “free beer”.

Free software, as defined by the Free Software Foundation, is software which can be used, copied, studied, modified and redistributed with little or no restriction beyond the requirement that source code must be made available.

Freedoms

  • The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
  • The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.
  • The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your neighbor (freedom 2).
  • The freedom to improve the program, and release your improvements to the public, so that the whole community benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a precondition for this.

Mixed Messages from Microsoft

Glynn Moody spots the expression "mixed source" and shrewdly guesses it's from the playbook. I Think he's right, and it's not going to please the Free software community. Better than Shared Source but not much.

gNewSense

A GNU/Linux project, to take all the binary blobs out of a rather popular distribution and make it all free. In doing so we have also produced a set of scripts that allow anyone to create a GNU/Linux Distribution.
