The "Exploding GlassFish" T-Shirt was a very special design created for JavaOne. I think it is very nice, but, what do I know about these things? My teenage kids, on the other hand, are experts - specially the 15yr-old skateboarding boy - and they both agree with me! Thanks to Court Patton over at Quichrbichn, you can now purchase this T-shirt online. Note that all proceeds go to a charity of your choice - just indicate which one at checkout. Enjoy! |

Alexis has collected a few good links on OpenMQ in his OpenMQ, the untold story. Noteworthy are the adoption stories from SNCF, TravelMuse, OakAir, RTL and Wotif, and the two uStream.TV videos from CommunityOne: video, part 1 and video, part 2. BTW, I can't find a public page with the roadmap for OpenMQ. I'll post it when I find it. |

The Jazoon conference is less than a month away and it kicks off with a GlassFish Day on Monday June 23rd 2008. Clearly the agenda is still pretty much a place-holder at this point but given the number and the quality of the speakers (Jérôme, Paul, Andi, Pat, Ludo, ...) I'm expecting a high-quality event. |
I'll be working on the detailed agenda (which may include some open space/unconference format) in the next few days. In the mean time Felipe has an overview of GlassFish talks at Jazoon.
Make sure you register for the GlassFish Day (marked as "Tutorial") so we have an idea at how many people we can expect. Again, this part of the conference is free.
It's been a while since my last Hudson Adoption roundup, so this is longer than usual:

Hands-On Labs from JavaOne 2008 are available online. You'll find detailed steps for the "Plug into GlassFish V3 with JavaServer Faces and jMaki" lab which is what inspired the "Admin Console Plugins in GlassFish v3" screencast. |
There's a total of 27 labs fully documented with detailed steps and archives. Here are the GlassFish-related ones:
• Adding Convergence of media to your Java EE Application using NetBeans IDE and Sailfin
• Metro: Try Out Simple and Interoperable Web Services
• Adding performance to your SIP based applications
• Develop an AJAX Portlet with Netbeans IDE, OpenPortal and Google Web Toolkit
• Building Rich Web Applications Using jMaki
• How to Build Ajax enabled Web Applications Using Project Woodstock
• Dynamic Service Composition with Open ESB: JavaOne Poll Application
• Orchestration of Web Services, Using WS-BPEL
• Building Secure, Reliable, Transactional SOA Applications Using Open ESB
• Query Continuous Data streams Using OpenESB's Intelligent Event Processor
Maybe you were lucky and managed to get one of the nice GlassFish memory sticks during JavaOne. But, if you didn't, here is your oppty: Jen, who put together the content for the original memory sticks has posted the same content in her blog. Just follow the links from her "Fish Stick Anyone?" writeup.
|
The virtual memory stick includes GlassFish v3 TP3, GlassFish v2UR2, MySQL, NetBeans, Hands-on Labs, WebSynergy, Screencasts, Documentation, Blogs, and more. It looks very complete. The World Wide Web - the ultimate (virtual) memory stick! :-) or, strictly speaking, USB flash drive... |

The Sun GlassFish Enterprise Server (nee Sun Java System Application Server) has a new, additional, "unlimited" pricing option. The offering was announced in the GlassFish Combo PR. As of this writing, the pricing has not yet propagated to the GF Subscriptions Page, but I know the concept is modeled on the MySQL Enterprise Unlimited offering. |
|
Today Sun is launching a new partner program for the GlassFish Server. This program is initially targeted at ISVs and hosting providers but we have also seen high interest from SIs, consultants and trainers and we will expand it in that direction in the near future - check the Program Info to apply. |
The initial companies in the program are listed below in alphabetical order. the list is growing, so check the Online Parter Showcase. Also, if you contacted us and you are not listed, please be patient and we will process your submission in the next few days.

JavaOne is proving to be its normal self. I had totally missed the GF v3 Admin Plugin Contest! I think it is a Nazrul/Anil special... Anyhow, thanks to Ken for the tip; go check the rules for the contest so you will have a chance to win a Canon SD1000 camera. And, if you think you have a really cool idea for a plugin, go an submit it to the GAP program; we still have a few openings. |
Fresh from the JavaOne today printed newletter for Day 1 (Tuesday), Hudson was awarded the 2008 DUke's Choice Award in the Developer Solutions category.

The release of the EJB 3.1 EDR Spec early last month generated good feedback but there is nothing like an implementation to help understand the spec so... Mahesh and the implementation team have just pushed out an EA of EJB3.1 that installs as a container in the newly available GFv3 TP2. Check out the Features Available and How to Install it. Also see Ken's intro to the plugin. |
Check it out and please give us feedback. Enjoy!

The GlassFish un-conference, party, and CommunityOne are behind us (and things went really, more on that once things settle down). Now JavaOne just started and there's plenty of GlassFish content. Rajeshwar has a convenient one-pager for GlassFish activities for the remainder of the week. |
Check it out and make sure if you're at JavaOne to stop by one of the GlassFish booths to say hello and chat about any GlassFish topic you may have.
JavaOne is always a forcing function for announcements, releases, deals, etc. Some happen during the week, some the weeks before - makes it a bit hard to keep up, but now that CommunityOne is over, I'll try to start catching up...

New Previews of JavaEE 6 Specifications:
• Rajiv announces the latest
Servlet 3.0 Draft Spec

Go check them out and provide feedback; it's the only way to ensre that the future specifications will satisfy your needs.

This year CommunityOne is going to include live streaming of the sessions. The technology is uStream.TV and it worked very well for me when I tested it earlier. I've been looking for something like this for a couple of years and, if it goes well today, I have plans to use it for live events (already created the TA Channel). Today's CommunityOne channels will be at uStream.TV/channel. Check it out and let us know how it works for you. |
|
If you are interested in the GlassFish Community and are in San Francisco tonight, please join us at our informal party tonight at the Thirsty Bear. Check out the details for this and other events at our Events Page. Added: Thanks to everybody that came! It was a great party; I had to leave at 9 but it was going very strong by then. |
|
More teasers out there... check out Andi's note on Java CAPS and Fuji. Project Fuji will be specially interesting to GlassFish; from the Fuji WebSite: [A] lightweight micro-kernel based on JBI (JSR 208) and OSGi. Packaged as an OSGi bundle, the micro-kernel can be installed in any OSGi-compliant runtime. |
For full details, check out Andi and Keiths' session on Wednesday at 9:30 am: TS-6385 Integration Profile for GlassFish Project v3

Nice Logo, BTW... :-) |

Monday's session on "GlassFish v2 and v3 - Overview and Roadmap" - S297768, Monday 11am, Esplanade 307 (Blurb, Agenda) is going to be a show with 3 acts:

GlassFish v3 TP2 is now available! Start at the Download Page; the release itself is just 22MB as a ZIP. Check: QuickStart Guide, Content, Tutorial and Documentation Index. |
This is the new modular, OSGi-based, version of the GlassFish Server. You will note it starts very fast (you can use "--verbose" for timing info). Once up it is listening on port 8080 (by default) and you get the Up and Running Page. Services are loaded (and downloaded if necessary!) as needed.
For example, if you go request the administration console it will be loaded and you will see the familiar Login Screen, and, behind it, the Administration Tasks.
GF v3 TP2 includes the new IPS-based package tool, and its associated Update Center 2. These tools are written in Python and the python packages will be downloaded on demand. Note that the Python Window kit (wxpython2.8), used by the UC2, is 128MB.
This release is described as a Technology Preview 2, but we believe it is actually quite solid; my hats off to the team for pulling it off!
Added: Also see Ludo's note on GFv3 TP2 and NB 6.1.
Here's the list: GreenFire (a recent JAX award), Underworld (Adam Bien), IzPack (Julien's contribution), Terracotta (Ari Zilka), SailFin (Ericsson's Christer Boberg), RTL use-case (by Daniel Chan), Hudson and Embedded GlassFish (by Kohsuke).
These talks will be very fast paced and some really nothing but a demo. I think we have a good line-up to make this an interesting session for everyone. Hope to see you there. As a reminder, CommunityOne is a free event. Registration is here.

If you have never attended an Unconference, this is your opportunity! We are hosting one for the GlassFish community the Sunday before JavaOne, at the Moscone (map). The topics and speakers in an unconference are decided by the attendees themselves (see the Open Space principles). The only thing you need to do now is to go to the Wiki page and record your intent to attend and your topics of interest; we already have 26 people. Alexis is Organizing the Event; there is discussion at the Advocacy list. Full details of the pre-J1 events at the the Unconference, Party and CommunityOne page. |

I've updated the GlassFish Event Page with the latest information on the 2008 GlassFish Unconference and CommunityOne. I have linked to 18 sessions related to GlassFish, covering AppServer, MQ, Portal, Social Software, ESB, FAM, Scripting, Persistence and Web Tier. |
Some of the sessions are in the GF "track", others are listed elsewhere. This means you can't be in all the sessions you likely want to attend, so bring a friend and compare notes.
CommunityOne is free but space is limited. Register Now to save your place.
3 weeks to go before JavaOne and I expect the usual flurry of announcements and releases. One we have already pre-announced is GlassFish v3 TP2; in the next days we will highlight some of the benefits of this release.
|
The two key features in GFv3 are modularity and Java EE 6, and the first one is showing with a twist: Jerome has announced that GFv3 runs on OSGi! The lower layers of HK2 were designed to be replaceable and the latest TP2 builds include a OSGi runtime. "Very eager" users can go try this in GFv3 TP2 b09; those that are just "eager" may want to wait for this week's build, or wait a bit longer for the actual TP2 release. |
We will be showcasing GFv3 TP2 and more at JavaOne but if you want a sneak preview come to the GlassFish Track of CommunityOne on Monday.

Here is a very brief sketch of GlassFish-related activities at CommunityOne; I'll flesh it out over the weekend - we are in the last stretch before JavaOne and "free" blogging time is limited - just as news peak up.
Sunday before JavaOne - unconference in the afternoon at the Moscone. Alexis will organize this, with discussion at the advocacy at glassfish.dev.java.net mailing list.
Sunday before JavaOne - party in the evening in the Moscone area. PaulH and JohnC will organize this, details still TBD.
Monday is CommunityOne. There are demos, a track and many sessions.
• General Session - with Keynote speakers
• Demos - ESB, Portal, SocialNetworks, GFv2 and v3, UC and more, with sneak previews.
• Track - Overview of v2 and v3, scripting, tools, and more, also sneak previews.
• Lighting Talks - Part of GF track, several mini-presentations.
• Other GF-realted Talks - Last count there were around 15 GF-related sessions
• Party - There is a nice party at the end of the day.
|
|
The room allocation for a track is based on the number of people registered in that track; please register for the GF if you are interested. |
|
The plans around GlassFish activities in JavaOne 2008 continue to evolve. In addition to the presence in CommunityOne (Monday, May 5th) we are going to host other activities the day before, Sunday, May 4th. Details are still unfolding but they are likely to be more focused on direct participation in GlassFish, in any of several roles, including contributors, system integrators, service providers, etc. Stay tuned but you may want to consider arranging your travel plans and accomodations accordingly. |
The foto is a 4 de 9 amb Folre from the Castellers de Vilafranca. A nice visual image of the benefits of community building...

Last Call for CommunityOne! |
|
One final call for submissions to CommunityOne 2008. As I Indicated Previously, the event will be in the Moscone Center, the Monday just before JavaOne - that is May 5th, 2008. The call for papers is very flexible but I would like to specially encourage your submissions on topics related to projects in the GlassFish Community. Hurry up, the submission is being extended for only a few extra days. Submission link is Here. |
|
CommunityOne is back. This year GlassFish, friends and relatives put together our first GlassFish Day. The model for 2008 has not yet been finalized but the organizing committee is asking for submissions now to sketch content. |
Like last year, attendees to C1 will get a free pass to the first day of JavaOne; registration for C1 starts in January and attendance is capped at 2500. The deadline for submission of abstracts is Jan 31st, check the process at the C1 Website.
We will discuss topics and approaches related to GlassFish submissions at the Advocacy@GF mailing list; there should be plenty of material for interesting submissions.
