If you thought August's job post was hectic, this month will blow you away! The focus is still heavily on Rails - and most of these jobs are in the United States (there's one in the UK - keep an eye out for it). The Ruby Inside Job Board (costs $99 for a 60 day listing - and you get featured on Ruby Inside like this) is the source for most of the positions.
This month's interesting opportunities:
Web Architect for McKinsey & Company (New York, NY): McKinsey & Company is, perhaps, the world's best-known global management consulting company and they're looking for a Web architect with experience in a number of open source areas - such as Apache, MySQL, Linux, Ruby and PHP - as well as a good feel for Web 2.0 technologies and principles and how best to leverage all of these things in the enterprise. This is not a client-facing consulting role, but one focused on developing McKinsey's own applications.
Advertising Startup needs a Senior Systems Architect (El Seguno, Los Angeles, CA): A "stealth startup" is looking for a senior systems architect with five years experience in developing applications in Java, PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, C++, C# or similar (I suspect 5 years coding experience with crossovers between these technologies would be suitable - if not beneficial). You would need to be comfortable with working in a startup atmosphere (the company recently closed a round of financing).
Backend Ruby on Rails Developer / Hacker at Uservoice (Sunnyvale, CA): UserVoice, a new customer feedback startup, is looking for someone who wants to work in a startup atmosphere hacking on Ruby on Rails in the SF Bay Area. You'll need to have enough sysadmin skills to get by in a pinch and have experience of scaling Rails apps and optimizing for performance.
The largest Rails site on the Web needs a Back-End Rails Engineer! (San Francisco, CA): Scribd, the document sharing site (I consider it the "YouTube for documents" but they might not be so keen on the comparison), is looking for a back-end Rails engineer to work on their ground-breaking site (supposedly the most trafficked Rails-powered site in the world). They're located in downtown San Francisco and are looking for someone who thinks about scaling Rails apps in their sleep and who's ready to leap into a real Rails sysadmin challenge. Scribd are also looking for a Data and Analytics Engineer.
TechCrunch needs a Ruby Developer (Atherton, CA): TechCrunch should need no introduction as the most influential and significant blog / news site surrounding the whole new Web startup world. They're mostly a Ruby shop and use Rails on a number of projects. The most significant project at this point is CrunchBase. The job requirements are realistic - you need at least six months' experience with Ruby and Rails, experience with Web applications and relational databases, and, ideally, a computer science degree. It should go without saying that this is an ideal position for someone who wants to learn about the industry as a whole and build up some excellent contacts.
Interactive Application Developer needed in SF (San Francisco, CA): Wested is a research and service agency working within under-served communities to increase the quality and service of education and other issues of human development. They're looking for someone to join an established, diverse team of Web, media, and database developers. You would be based in the SoMa office in SF, have UNIX experience, know Ruby (and OO in general), and have database, SQL, HTML, and CSS experience.
Get Satisfaction needs a Ruby Zen Master! (San Francisco, CA): Get Satisfaction is a popular startup offering Web-based community service / helpdesk services for other Web applications. They're looking for a "Ruby zen master" to help build and extend their primary Web application. The ideal candidate will be a great generalist well versed in Ruby (whether using Rails or not), database work, problem solving, and a willingness to analyze pre-existing code.
Stealth healthcare startup needs a Rails Web Applications Engineer (San Francisco, CA): A VC-funded stealth startup in the healthcare industry is looking for a Ruby on Rails Web applications engineer to help work on innovative Web applications. They're using Rails, Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Prototype, Scriptaculous and Memcached - so experience and willingness to learn will be needed with these. You'll need a Computer Science degree and have experience in developing Web applications as well as TDD/BDD.
Volunteer Rails Developer needed for Non-Profit (Cambridge, MA): Citizens Market, a nonprofit aiming to empower consumers with user-generated information about the social and environmental performance of companies, is looking for a Rails Web developer to join their team and help develop their prototype application. The time commitment and schedule is flexible; though a minimum of three hours a week for three months is desired.
Rails Developer needed in New York (New York, NY): The Paperless Press is a B2C Web-based startup started by a group of Harvard grads that offers a new take on traditional paper correspondence. They need a self-starting Rails developer who has the initiative to plan and execute product improvements while helping to grow an initial beta application into a robust app.
Full-stack Web developer needed at Kinfo (San Francisco, CA): Kinfo is a well-funded start-up located in South Park, San Francisco looking for a highly motivated, self-directed full-stack web developer to join their tightly knit team. Experience with Ruby, Rails and Javascript is desirable, but if you have other OO and web programming experience and learn quickly they can get you up to speed. Kinfo believes strongly in a TDD/BDD oriented workflow and are committed to RSpec and RSpec stories. They also mix it up by spending some days teleworking at home or in cafes.
Ruby on Rails Developer in Cambridge, England (Cambridge, UK): If you’re looking for a UK-based Ruby on Rails opportunity, can work in Cambridge, and enjoy the buzz of a brand new well-funded startup then look no further. AlphaSights are recruiting from entry level to senior positions and offer very competitive salaries and a great working environment.

It has not gone unnoticed that random announcements of individual events do not work well here on Ruby Inside. With events taking more of a local focus these days, it makes more sense to pool the announcements together. This post, therefore, is a rather uncelebrated launch of a new series of event-related compilation posts. Please make sure to post in comments if you have other events you want to mention or visit our Contact page.
MerbCamp - October 11 and 12, 2008 - San Diego, CA, USA
MerbCamp is an upcoming official gathering for the Merb community. Confirmed keynotes are by Ezra Zygmuntowicz and Yehuda Katz. The conference will take place in San Diego, California on October 11-12 on the UCSD campus. Registration is not yet open, but a mailing list is available. The camp is also looking for sponsors.
Great Lakes Ruby Bash - October 11, 2008 - Ann Arbor, MI, USA
The Great Lakes Ruby Bash is a general Ruby-focused event in Michigan. It's on October 11, 2008 - the same date as MerbCamp (above) and takes place on the University of Michigan campus at Ann Arbor, Michigan (y'know, where Kevin in American Pie went to college). The conference has its own Twitter account (@greatlakesruby) and they're still looking for speakers.
Rails Summit Latin America - October 15 and 16, 2008 - São Paulo, Brasil
The Rails Summit Latin America is an ambitious attempt at giving South America its own large Rails conference (a la RailsConf and RailsConf Europe). South America isn't an area that established conference players tend to head to, so Locaweb, a Brazilian Web hosting company, are bravely picking up the baton. Registration costs 300 Brazilian Reals(about $180 US) until September 8th, then goes up a little to 400 Real. The event takes place in October and speakers confirmed so far include Fabio Akita, Dr. Nic Williams, Chris Wanstrath, Chad Fowler, and lots of local speakers who it'll be excellent to see represented.
Voices That Matter: Professional Ruby Conference - November 17-20, 2008 - Boston, MA, USA
The Voices That Matter: Professional Ruby Conference is a Pearson Education event - Pearson are the team behind Addison-Wesley's Professional Ruby Series, headed by Obie Fernandez. The organizers say that the conference will "provide practical, people-oriented and in-depth information about using Ruby and the Rails platform to create dynamic technology solutions."
Obie Fernandez is the conference's technical chair, and heads an extremely solid speaker list including Ruby and Rails luminaries like Giles Bowkett, Thomas Enebo, Hal Fulton, Chad Pytel, Tammer Saleh, Ezra Zygmuntowicz, and others.
This post supported by Notifixious - Notifixious - a new notification service startup based in San
Francisco - needs a Rails expert to become its CTO! Knowledge of messaging technologies (XMPP) and REST API development is a must. You can learn more here.
