Screnshot of a windows based calculator running on a computer with the Wine emulator and Ubuntu operating system. After installing it to this directory I was able to create a desktop shortcut. Suprisingly easy to do. :-)

This afternoon I set up Ubuntu (Dapper), a linux based operating system as the default desktop on an old computer at home. Very easy to do and the kids were quick to discover and play with the default games.
I was impressed to see the software checked online that all the important files were up to date. I was curious how it would handle this. The process only took a few minuites to complete and critical patches were automatically installed with little user intervention needed. Very cute.

I gave all of my Information Technology students a CDROM set containing the Ubuntu distribution. Most loaded the free, open source software, some tried out the bootable Linux system, a few even tried out the full installation. Linux is growing up and winning over some new fans. I think there are some good reasons to have Information Technology students see and play with different desktop solutions.

Kubuntu 6.06 running KDE 3.5.4. The wallpaper is an adaptation I made of the "Geared Globe" wallpaper included in the default Kubuntu package.

A: Not as bad as earlier
As a sidenote, I'm really liking Ubuntu on my old Vaio laptop, but why is it such a pain to browse the web? I can ping any website, but can't visit it in a browser.
