Subversion Turns 1.5

Given the number of developers using Subversion, I'm surprised that no one on my blogroll has mentioned the new Subversion clients released in the last few weeks. Subversion, TortoiseSVN, and VisualSVN have all synchronized their version numbers on v1.5. I'll talk about TortoiseSVN and Subversion changes. VisualSVN has some minor enhancements that basically expose the features introduced by Subversion 1.5. I'll leave you to investigate them yourself.

It's not the Gates, it's the bars

To pay so much attention to Bill Gates' retirement is missing the point. What really matters is not Gates, nor Microsoft, but the unethical system of restrictions that Microsoft, like many other software companies, imposes on its customers.

Firefox 3 USB Edition

I’ve been wanting to test out Firefox 3 since it was released a short time ago.  I have so many tweaks and plugins installed on my old Firefox 2 instance, that I am not ready to blow it away just yet.  Also, over time I’ve been burned many times by becoming an early adopter that I’ve learned just because its new, does not necessarily mean its better.   I decided it would probably be a good idea to install FF3 to my USB  thumb drive instead of my main system for now.  Luckily PortableApps has packaged and released Firefox3 portable for USB drives.

Windows Beats Linux/OSX at Handwriting

Lately I’ve been trying to code an application which requires some form of natural handwriting recognition. Natural Handwriting is basically the way you write on your Tablet/Pocket PC/Palm/Mobile, either using a stylus on your touch-screen or on the desktop using mouse. And after looking at different options available for handwriting recognition, Windows beats every other operating system including Linux and Mac OSX hands down!! And sad because the application for which I’m developing this handwriting recognition module is a popular open-source kids software and mainly targeted towards Linux distros.

Firefox 3 Download Frenzy Breaks Website Attempting to Break Record

In an attempt to break the world record for most downloads, the traffic generated reiked havoc on both mozilla’s main website as well as the spreadfirefox website. For a split second the main website went down and was showing an “http://1.1 Service Unavailable” error (Reminds me of the error seen on the US Amazon.com page a few weeks ago. For coverage on that outage check out this article.). It looks to be back up and was only down for a split second. At the time of this post the spread firefox website was still down.

Windows Hosting rates are killing Developers and Students... Is Microsoft aware ?

I was shocked to get an email today morning from my close buddy, now can be called as a free lancer. He informed me that he had said a life long "goodbye" to Microsoft platform for ever, since he was constantly losing more money on hosting charges and some times even had to pay from his own pocket to survive. He informed me that he shall be working with Open Source Languages now onwards, and he did not regret a bit to leave Microsoft career for ever. He was keen to survive today, rather than be remembered as an .Net developer tomorrow. He used to be a C# Genius, and have been working on big projects.

5 Indespensible Tips for Emacs on Windows

Emacs is generally not very popular on Windows based operating systems. The default installation of Emacs leaves you with a very spartan UI and a very basic editor. We will be concentrating on making some OS specific tweaks. I have 5 simple yet useful tips below, which I have tested with a GNU Emacs 23.0.0.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) running on Windows XP.
