W3C Semantic Web Activity

The Semantic Web is about two things. It is about common formats for integration and combination of data drawn from diverse sources, where on the original Web mainly concentrated on the interchange of documents. It is also about language for recording how the data relates to real world objects. That allows a person, or a machine, to start off in one database, and then move through an unending set of databases which are connected not by wires but by being about the same thing.

Douglas Crockford on Web Standards and JavaScript

I became a bit of a JavaScript fanboy while writing Simply JavaScript last year, so it was especially thrilling to get to sit down with Douglas Crockford—possibly the world’s biggest JavaScript fanboy—and geek out on our mutual love of JavaScript at Web Directions South 2008 a couple of weeks ago.

XHTML Strict validation is a tool, not a way of life

At some point as a front-end developer I think we all have to draw a line for HTML validation. Strict validation is not a holy grail you need or can crusade for. It improves your code but has also it’s downside. For example target:_blank is no longer available, you need a javascript snippet to get around it. And when you get there, what’s the point? Your template no longer really validate. The target attribute doesn’t validate because you can’t choose for the user to open a link in another window, but you decided to do it anyway!!!

No OOXML, Norwegians leave their Standards Body in protest.

13 members of the TC in Norway has left their Standards Body in protest. They say that the Standards Body has lost its credibility in the IT area. An approach to exception handling

In response to another blog post -- an approach to exception handling: when exceptions (checked or unchecked) should be thrown, caught, logged, wrapped, swallowed, or allowed to pass through. These aren't really hard & fast rules, but more the approach I take to these questions.

Ajaxified Body...

I've often wondered if it was possible to use Ajax to reload the main content of a web application without reloading the header, menu and footer. SiteMesh allows you to move these common elements to a decorator that gets wrapped around each page.

What's the Best Way to Handle Exceptions?

Trying to figure out the best ways to handle exceptions, which mostly seems to be context-sensitive. Checked/Unchecked? Swallow or re-throw? Are there any rules-of-thumb to always follow?

If you don't know the difference between HTTP and DNS, don't blog about it

Pet peeve time: screaming technical inaccuracies in blog posts do a huge disservice to the root problem being discussed. If you're going to discuss hijacking DNS errors for the purposes of advertising, then please do so - don't call them DNS "error pages" (there are no such things) or refer to them as "404 errors".
