jQuery and Microsoft: The Q&A

Now that the news has hit the blogosphere, I'm seeing lots of questions out there about the jQuery/MSFT announcement.

Why the AJAX/DHTML Model is broken

I believe that the AJAX/DHTML model is broken...at least for widespread adoption. Here I explain why lack of standards and huge fragmentation is killing widespread adoption of browser based rich UIs.

ongoing · 2008 Prediction 1: RIA vs. AJAX

The people who want to add UI 'richness' to the Web are always developers, never users. Doesn’t mean they’re wrong; after all, the users weren’t clamoring for the Web before it arrived, either. 'richness' is mostly about compelling words and pictures and sounds and especially, most especially, interaction with living people. But that’s not what they mean when they say RIAs; they mean "Whatever lies in the direction that Flash is pointing." Flash is most useful for watching movies portably and cool casual games.

How JavaScript is quietly taking over the world

"The fact is that JavaScript, which was hurriedly released around 1995, is now more prevalent than you might imagine. And equally importantly, it is cropping up in different places and in forms that people never thought of way back in it’s early years."

The Future of ASP.NET AJAX

Bertrand LeRoy recently published a 13 page document on CodePlex, describing the ASP.NET Team’s goals for the future of ASP.NET AJAX. It’s been available for two weeks now, but there has been little reaction to it online and less than 8,000 people have downloaded it. I’m surprised, considering its importance.

Doesn't Anyone Bookmark Anymore?

When I teach Silverlight 2, I stress an important lesson that I thought that we (as developers) had learned the importance of linkability of the web. Early usage of Flash was the first time I noticed this. A number of those sites would create nested functionality that never changed the URL. If the URL doesn't change, i can't bookmark it. Most Flash guys learned their lessons pretty quick, but now I am inundated with AJAX driven sites that try hard to not to do post-backs. That's cool, but if the URL doesn't change I can't link to it.

What will be the next generation internet application platform?

A few years ago I was a firm believer in the Rich Connected Client application model, which was based on running applications installed locally on the users desktop.

AJAX developers continue migrating to unobtrusive JavaScript

Unobtrusive JavaScript is an emerging technique that separates JavaScript from HTML markup. This is quite similar to the separation between styling and HTML that came about with the creation of CSS in the late 90s.

Comment re: 2008 Prediction 1: RIA vs. AJAX

Well, one of the big trends is actually getting AJAX to be able to do what the RIA platforms can.

Is Comet the Next Step Beyond AJAX?

So many companies have jumped aboard the AJAX train that when we wanted to do an informal survey the other day on upcoming Web and Internet technology trends, I was able to quickly compile a list of 800 different companies that are leaving the station. AJAX is moving toward the enterprise. Google, the company that helped light the AJAX wildfire in the first place by using it in Google Maps and Gmail, has since then released a paid version of its Web-based applications for small businesses, Google Apps Premier Edition, which relies on AJAX.

Ajax Predictions for 2008

I'm a little early this year for my 2008 predictions. No matter. I seem to have been a bit early with my 2007 predictions as well, and as they say in the venture capital biz, "too early is the same thing as wrong." Some of my predictions did come true
