You learn m4 because you're either a developer being forced to do something a chimpanzee could do, or else because you're trying to configure sendmail. If you work at Microsoft, and it's 1998 or so, then you don't learn it, or if you did learn it, then you don't use it, because your management really thinks renaming crap by hand is a better use of a score of developers than actually implementing something.
