Adobe FrameMaker – A Platform For Technical Documentation, Structured Authoring and Large-Scale Content Management

Adobe FrameMaker is an industry-leading technical documentation, structured authoring, and large-scale content management system capable of handling massive volumes of information without slowing down or crashing.

Structure View provides an easier way of managing cross-references than ever. This feature has replaced Tree View and brings numerous enhancements, such as being able to select multiple variables and copy/paste into other paragraphs.

Text formatting toolbar

Adobe FrameMaker is a robust software platform used by enterprises and professionals alike for technical documentation, structured authoring, digital publishing and content management. Offering WYSIWYG PDF output with powerful content management features like WYSIWYG PDF editing tools in a single environment – alongside collaborative authoring of structured documents – collaborative editing capabilities are also supported alongside an array of integrations for managing content – making Adobe FrameMaker an undisputed leader when it comes to large-scale authoring and structured publishing projects.

The Text Formatting toolbar makes formatting text easy with just one click, including bolding and italicizing text, increasing or decreasing font size, changing case, tracking text edits, as well as sentence casing to selected paragraphs. Access this toolbar via View > Toolbars.

The toolbar offers similar functionality as FrameMaker’s Quick Access Bar, but now resides on top right of the screen and can be customized and moved anywhere on it. Additionally, you have options to display it either floating toolbar-like or docked panel style.

Text formatting toolbar provides users with all of the tools necessary to easily create and modify Paragraph and Character Formats as well as select from an extensive range of fonts from Font menu for their document’s default font selection. Text formatting toolbar offers authors a simple solution for streamlining their authoring workflow while saving time on tedious repetitive tasks.

Create a custom keyboard shortcut to easily open the Text formatting toolbar, customizing its contents as necessary and making accessing most-often used features of the program simpler.

Adobe has improved the text formatting toolbar performance and added support for more recent file formats, as well as providing an updated spell check that takes into account punctuation and special characters when looking for spelling errors – providing more accurate spell checks that may identify some misspellings which would otherwise have been flagged incorrect by previous versions of FrameMaker.

Sentence Casing

Sentence Casing automatically converts text you type to either uppercase or lowercase as you type, making the feature available across a document.

If you have a large book or chapter document, using paragraph and marker styles to divide into smaller chapters is an efficient way to divide them up. Furthermore, powerful preview tools allow for visualizing what the final structure will be after they have been applied.

Adobe FrameMaker allows for the import and export of graphics between Interleaf/Quicksilver(r) and Microsoft Word as Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) or PostScript (PS) files, making them much simpler to edit than bitmaps. When exporting to PDF, Acrobat converts these vector-based files to Acrobat documents that can then be edited in Adobe Illustrator(r).

FrameMaker utilizes the same font set for WYSIWYG and XML editing, enabling you to easily work in structured content editing while still working in WYSIWYG view without switching back and forth between different editing views.

With the WYSIWYG editor, you can change the layout of pages and paragraphs within a page using its Format menu. Furthermore, you can customize font sizes and styles used within documents or projects using this editor.

To create a new paragraph style, navigate to Paragraphs > Paragraph Styles or Character Styles > Character Styles and select your preferred settings before clicking OK. FrameMaker then adds this new style to its catalog of styles and applies it when creating new paragraphs or characters. To modify existing styles’ properties further, navigate to Styles list and edit its settings using Paragraph or Character Designer.

Spacing properties have various names depending on their purpose: characters that sit close together are called pair kerning, while altering line spacing is known as spread or tracking; distance from one line to the next can be measured using leading. FrameMaker lets you adjust these properties for the entire document or just individual paragraphs.

Well-designed templates should link formats so that FrameMaker recognizes them as one set of changes and applies them consistently. For instance, paragraph formats often contain counters which increment paragraph numbers each time they appear – this method of numbering is known as autonumber formatting, and often combined with table $table> and figure $fig> markers as well as counters for chapter $chapter> and volume $volnum> markers.

Document splitting

Adobe FrameMaker is an invaluable tool for technical documentation, structured authoring and large-scale content management. Used by over 1910 companies globally as Digital Publishing and Document Creation Software, FrameMaker excels at producing intelligent multilingual technical documentation that can easily repurposed for different delivery channels.

Document splitting in FrameMaker provides an efficient means for breaking long documents down into chapters. Based on markers or paragraph formats selected during document creation, documents are separated out and saved as book files and chapter files in separate folders. A log file also shows progress of document splitting process.

With our main release, the document splitting feature now supports importing tagged PDFs for use by assistive technologies to describe publication layout and content in such a way as to be easily read on devices with different screen sizes.

Document Splitting also features support for creating 508-compliant PDFs and responsive HTML5 outputs, along with text tagging, images tagging and table tagging features. In addition, improved logic for creating table of contents (TOC) tables now appears automatically with class names for paragraph and character formats appearing as defined in catalogs.

Now you can insert video and audio files directly into FrameMaker documents, with these media being automatically published in their final PDF and responsive HTML5 outputs. This makes creating interactive branded documentation that is more accessible for various audiences much simpler.

Adobe FrameMaker now can easily detect the formatting of paragraphs and text elements by using font, size and other properties to detect their format. This makes applying consistent formatting across pages and documents much simpler – you could even apply one font across an entire book or project!

Review PDF

Adobe FrameMaker is a desktop publishing application specifically tailored for long technical documents. With features that facilitate project management and translation capabilities, it makes managing large projects much simpler – online review, translation capabilities, structured authoring through XML/DITA to ensure consistent formatting without losing design integrity, multilingual publishing support and multilingual authoring – making creating and editing documentation in multiple languages an effortless process.

Review PDF is an effective collaboration tool when reviewers do not require direct changes in the source document. With this feature, PDFs can be shared for review and comments collected via Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, Reader DC or another supported review application – which you can then import into FrameMaker files to quickly address feedback quickly and efficiently.

FrameMaker also features several collaborative writing features beyond its Review PDF feature, such as text edit tracking, PDF review support and version comparison capabilities. You can even divide documents into topics and chapters for effective structuring as well as saving time by being able to review smaller portions at one time.

One of the key upgrades in this release is the addition of XMP metadata to FrameMaker files, providing users with easy access to locate and manage their assets in a central repository for faster creation and publishing of digital content.

FrameMaker remains a widely used piece of corporate software, but many of its users view it as outdated and have rejected updates, preferring instead to keep using the same version. Adobe has since sought to address these frustrations by making major upgrades available through FrameMaker itself.
