System efficiency utilities such as PerfectDisk, Diskeeper and the Windows XP defrag utility are designed to enhance system efficiencies by defragging logical disks created by operating systems and removing fragmentation bottlenecks that inhibit performance.

Automatic Defragmentation

Diskeeper excels over its built-in Windows defragger by closely tracking each file access on your computer – including reading, writing and deletion operations – to minimize fragmentation and overall disk access times. It can do this without straining system resources as it handles frequent writes to both NTFS and FAT systems with ease.

Diskeeper differs from other defragmenters by working invisibly as a background process and running across multiple partitions without needing to be manually activated or scheduled by users, including compressed, encrypted or sparse ones. Furthermore, Diskeeper works on NTFS drives that have rearranged logical volumes as well as moving and defragging files stored on system swapfiles.

Diskeeper stands out as an innovative solution in its ability to automatically and constantly prevent future fragmentation, using real-time analysis of file allocation and usage patterns to pinpoint files frequently accessed by Windows, prioritizing them over others such as executables that should be placed further back to reduce disk seek times.

“Truly automatic defragmentation” is made possible with Diskeeper’s proprietary InvisiTasking technology, which reduces resource contention during defragmentation by running below OS scheduler and allocating CPU cycles as necessary; low priority tasks take priority over high priority ones for defragmentation purposes. According to Diskeeper, this feature is particularly helpful on large enterprise systems with various background processes like anti-virus scanning or snapshotting running simultaneously – and Diskeeper provides results twice faster performance over its built-in Windows defragger with gradual increase over time as long as Diskeeper runs regularly compared with using built-in Windows defragger alone!

Scheduled Defragmentation

Diskeeper’s revolutionary, proactive IntelliWrite technology is the only software capable of preventing fragmentation from happening – doubling system performance over the built-in defragmenter. While other products simply defrag files, Diskeeper offers powerful background defragging that doesn’t compete for active system resources and keeps future fragmentation at bay.

Condusiv has also introduced IntelliMemory Caching, which will enhance performance by automatically caching frequently accessed data in idle hardware memory (DRAM), drastically speeding up application speeds by eliminating the need for hard drives to search across their disk. This feature works seamlessly on both mechanical and solid state drives.

This software features flexible scheduling options to allow for different jobs to run at certain times of day or week. This gives administrators more freedom over when and how often defragmentation runs; individual volume defragmentation/analysis can also be scheduled at predetermined intervals. Available as Home, Professional and Server editions – each offering different features – it can either be installed directly onto a computer running Windows, or remotely using a central management station.

Diskeeper’s competitors include Symantec’s Norton Speed Disk 5.0 and Raxco Software Inc.’s PerfectDisk 2000 from Raxco Software. Both offer similar features but differ in their approach to storage optimization and network deployment; Diskeeper offers more user-friendly interface while SpeedDisk has better remote administration and server support, and PerfectDisk boasts superior defragmentation performance and more detailed analysis tools than Diskeeper does.

Both products provide quick or full defragmentation capabilities of hard disks, with Diskeeper going further by offering instantaneous defragmenting that prevents further fragmentation as it occurs – unlike other defragmenters that must wait until critical mass is achieved, which may take hours or days on certain hard drives.

Diskeeper provides an efficient method for re-fragmenting files that have already become fragmented, though both products offer similar services. While both perform re-fragmentation, Diskeeper reduces processing time by only unifying free space and consolidating files rather than breaking them up and then reformatting. While this saves processing time, it means some previously fragmented files must be re-fragmented when saved back onto disk.

Disk Analysis

Diskeeper stands out from its competition by its ability to defragment and analyze multiple disks simultaneously, running faster, and providing more detailed reports than Windows’ built-in defrag utility. Its Performance Map offers an “at-a-glance” indicator of file access speed across each volume; red areas indicate low performing system files while blue ones represent those performing exceptionally well while white stands for free space.

Diskeeper offers another advantage with its IntelliWrite technology, which works real time to optimize writes on per-volume basis and orchestrate file allocation to keep associated clusters as contiguous as possible – this helps prevent 85 percent of fragmentation according to Diskeeper, while Instant Defrag can defrag 15 percent more without rebooting required.

Diskeeper was found to be significantly faster in our tests when compared with PerfectDisk, possibly due to not defragmenting free space or consolidating files, thus saving time in processing time. On the downside, creating new files larger than available chunks will force Diskeeper to split them up right from the beginning into multiple fragments for storage on different hard disks.

Diskeeper offers I-FAAST technology, which speeds up access and writing files by up to 80%. It does this through an innovative approach to data caching that does not interfere with paging, file logging or any other system operations.

Diskeeper, which we used for our tests, also features HyperFast SSD optimization to increase performance by reducing read/write latency by up to two-fold and improving speed through defragging master file tables, page files and NTFS boot sectors. Furthermore, some SSDs support TRIM functionality built directly into Diskeeper software.

Diskeeper features are comparable to Symantec Norton Speed Disk 5.0 and Raxco Software’s PerfectDisk 2000; however, their price tags are significantly lower. Furthermore, Diskeeper also offers a free version called Diskeeper Lite that only analyses and defragment one disk volume at a time; unfortunately it lacks Set It and Forget It scheduling functions, network management capabilities and central administration features found in full products.

Diskeeper, previously known as Diskeeper Corporation, recently unveiled version 12 of their Windows Application and Storage Performance software designed to optimize servers, operating systems, desktops and notebooks. Newly appointed CEO Jerry Baldwin wasted no time making his mark at Diskeeper after joining its ranks last fall.

The software works to prevent fragmentation at the Windows level so applications and files can access files more quickly by one contiguous access instead of multiple, scattered attempts, enhancing drive performance while prolonging SSD lifespan and relieving operating system/device stress.

Diskeeper has earned its place among the easiest defragmentation tools due to its user-friendly design and outstanding performance over time. This latest release boasts a revamped main interface designed to make schedule creation simpler while providing access to an historical feature which shows users how regular defragmentations has enhanced performance over time.

Other key features include IntelliMemory Caching engine that utilizes idle, available hardware memory to cache frequently-accessed data – eliminating I/O contention with just one click while improving performance as DRAM is 15x faster than SSDs. In addition, Diskeeper now detects and optimises resource usage within shared storage systems using its CogniSAN technology ensuring external systems never compete for resources with internal applications or storages.

Additionally, Diskeeper Administrator Edition now enables IT administrators to easily and automatically deploy and configure Diskeeper Server and V-locity on network systems with its centralized management tool, providing installation, configuration, monitoring, updating, email reports and alerts for all Diskeeper installations across a site as well as client installed products like Undelete from a central console.

Diskeeper Server and V-locity come in Standard, Enterprise and Administrator editions to optimize application performance on Windows Server operating systems (Server 2008 R2, 2003 and Small Business Server 2011) while the latter two optimize storage and application performance on desktops and laptops running Windows 7 through Vista with Diskeeper Home installed or Windows XP using Diskeeper Home. Furthermore, an Administrator edition provides centralised management of all Diskeeper operations using policy-based management with support for native IPv6 networking capabilities.
