Netgate Internet Security Review

NETGATE Internet Security

NETGATE Internet Security is an innovative protection program that can stop spyware, viruses, adware, Trojans, worms, phishing attacks, rootkits and spam from accessing your computer. With its proactive resident shield component and dynamic heuristic engine to detect new and emerging Internet threats.

Secure networking solutions using pfSense Plus software provide high performance, feature-packed firewalls and VPN routing with granular user permissions and scale packet processing that protect networks from attack and offer substantial cost savings over time.

Features

NETGATE Internet Security is a comprehensive malware scanning software solution designed to offer protection from different forms of malicious code. Comprised of two components – FortKnox Firewall and Spy Emergency – which work together as an effective system protection tool against malware including adware, Trojans, viruses and spyware; its self-learning anti-malware engine can continually evolve itself to remain effective against emerging threats.

This program also boasts several additional features, such as an advanced URL filtering system which blocks access to potentially hazardous websites, blocking spam, phishing and instant messenger threats as well as scanning for and uninstalling spyware programs that don’t have uninstall options, even those hidden within legitimate programs – and can detect adware that hides itself within legitimate programs!

Another helpful feature is its ability to monitor all connections to and from a computer, preventing unwanted connection attempts by blocking specific applications or setting rules to block connections for specific times of day. Furthermore, it detects and alerts the user of any changes to firewall settings that could aid in protecting from malware attacks.

Netgate’s pfSense platform provides enterprises and service providers with an expansive array of use cases for load balancing, traffic shaping, captive portals, UTM devices, DNS/DHCP servers, IDS/IPS systems and failover WAN devices – among many others. Plus versions offer additional customization to meet your unique network’s specific requirements.

All pfSense products can be deployed either as appliances or software-only deployments for maximum flexibility, with hardware devices built and tested in-house to ensure reliability and superior performance. Netgate provides three tiers of support for its hardware and software solutions as well as providing technical assistance via free community forums. pfSense does not charge throughput, seat or connection capacity add-on charges which makes the solution attractive to small and midsized businesses that wish to avoid additional fees for features they want without incurring additional fees for extra features; additionally the team has developed an efficient process for responding to vulnerability advisories alerts.

Installation

NETGATE Internet Security is an antivirus and firewall program designed to keep hackers from accessing sensitive personal data on PCs. Among its many features are antivirus scanning and firewall protection as well as anti-spyware, adware, trojan rootkit spam and phishing protection. With an intuitive user-friendly interface that easily adapts to novice users with limited technical knowledge and updates regularly with the latest threats this program is essential in safeguarding PCs against online threats and protect personal information.

Installation for NETGATE Internet Security is straightforward and effortless. After downloading and running the installer from its official website, simply follow its on-screen instructions for running on PCs and creating an admin account and giving your system a name that identifies it. After completion of installation you can generate passwords as well as save configuration files.

Netgate is a leading open source-driven secure networking company offering appliance and software-based firewall, VPN, routing, and IPSec solutions for small to large business environments. A typical deployment for small businesses would involve setting up Remote Access VPN so staff can work from home while GEO filtering helps limit traffic to certain countries while splitting networks into VLANs improve performance. In more complex installations monitoring and high availability capabilities are implemented as well as private cloud linkages between offices.

On all Netgate hardware, pfSense Plus firewall comes preinstalled and optimized for each platform. In addition, eligible hardware purchased from our store includes Netgate Global Support which gives users direct access to developers.

After installing pfSense Plus is complete, basic LAN/WAN configuration can be performed. Before proceeding with any further configurations, however, a backup should first be created by selecting the menu at the top of the GUI and selecting “Diagnostics > Backup/Restore”. A USB serial console connection to COM2 may also provide access to its configuration – useful if a GUI login becomes locked out or its password forgotten.

Configuration

The NETGATE Internet Security appliance is preloaded with pfSense Plus software and configured by default to allow access from the LAN to the Internet, local hosts and remote servers. It is recommended that this basic configuration be used to begin with as it will provide the most comprehensive network security without requiring further customization. It is a good idea to backup the current firewall configuration prior to making any changes. This can be done by browsing to Diagnostics > Backup/Restore.

The next page (Figure General Information Screen) configures the firewall name and domain in which this firewall will reside. This is also where the administrator user name and password are set. Once this page is completed the installer will then proceed to setup a connection to the Internet from the appliance.

Depending on the type of Internet service provider and modem provided, there are various options available. If the WAN interface of this firewall is connected to a home cable modem, a dynamic IP address will be assigned from the ISP DHCP server. This will be the Public IP address that networks behind this firewall will use to communicate with the outside world. This will be selected in the WAN type field on this page. Static addresses may also be entered.

If this firewall is configured to work in a environment which requires a proxy for outbound traffic, the proxy URL and port must be entered here. This is the location of the proxy which will handle requests from this firewall for items such as packages and updates. The port is a value set by the proxy and may be different than the default 8080 or 443 shown on this page.

If the WAN interface of this firewall is configured to use a DHCP server, it will be necessary to enter the DUID (User Defined Identifier) of the DHCP server in this section. The DUID is a link-layer identifier for the firewall in the format xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx. This will be needed to establish a secure NAT relationship between the firewall and the external DNS servers.
